54\" mmm on TC18

Hi all!
Has anyone had a noice when takeing the pto out of gear with their MMM. Its a rattle of some sort and you can see the idle pully jumping around pretty good. If you raise the deck first it doestn make the noise as bad. Without the deck hooked to the pto it doesnt do it at all...its all in the deck it seems. The tractor had R-4 tires too. The dealer cant figure it out and a factory rep is comming to look at it......any idea's guys and gals
Thanks Larry...PS its my dads tractor. He liked mine so much he got one....but he aint as happy as i so far

I hear something like what your are describing on my TC24 w/ 60" RD MMM. I wasn't too concerned about it at first, but now you've got me curious if there is something wrong w/ mine. Let me know what you find out.

Mine does the same thing. Has for 3yrs. now. What it sounds like to me is gear rattle after the PTO isn't suppling the power anymore and the momentum of the the blades etc. is now going just a tad faster then the gearbox for a short interval.

Re: 54\" mmm on TC18

I personally think its the idler pully and the pto shaft combined. I idle pully hops around pretty good as you push in the clutch. With the deck in the up postion the pto shaft is more straight and spins free'er and i think its rattleing do to that. It my dads tractor and he cant stand any noise at all. it leads him to feel somthings wrong. The tractor is brand new also. Mine is the TC21d with 60" deck and it makes alitttle noise just not as much as his. If they cant fix it he told them to keep it and he wants his money back!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I wonder if it has anything to do with blade balance after the PTO load is removed.

Re: 54\" mmm on TC18

I have the 60" mm deck on mine. It doesnt make that noise. My dad requested they swap his 54" out for the 60". They didnt want to do it....but with alot of pressure they are going to. They wanted to do warntee work on it as follows. 1) put a double type spring on the idle pully to increase tention. My dad said no way....it will wreck the bearings and shorten the life of the belt. 2) they wanted to relocate the gearbox. My dad said no flippin way!.... 60"deck or stuff it! They told my dad NH better buy back the 54" or there may be a extra charge....ha ha i dont think so, there is no difference in price. One of the things that is different between the 54" and the 60" is the pully diameters. The 54" is 1 1/2 smaller than the 60" creating 450 more rps. then with the lighter blades due to length the deck stops faster and puts alot of bounce into the idle pully and it travels thru the pto creating noise.

Re: 54\" mmm on TC18

Hi Larry,

My TC21D does the same thing. The only thing I worry about is twice I've had the gearbox on the top of the deck come loose. The bolts came right out of the deck. I'd just double check the three bolts holding the gearbox to the deck, if they are good you should be fine.
