I have a KingKutter rotary cutter. The manual states not to use it at faster than 540 rpm. I do not have a tach. on my machine. I have a Mitsubishi D2300 the PTO has 4 speeds. What gear should I be cutting in?

I would hope you had an owner's manual..but I reckon you don't.

I cannot help you, but there is a Mitsubishi forum that you should post this question in..
Good luck!

FWIW, your manual should also state that mowing at LESS than 540 rpms is not recommended either. The gear selected for propelling the tractor has nothing to do with producing PTO speed. That's strictly a function of the PTO speed select lever (if you have one) and the throttle. With the PTO spinning the mower ~540, you should then select the transmission gear ratio that produces the best cut behind the mower.

You put the speed select lever in 540, and adjust the engine rpms accordingly. I know that's difficult without a tach, so you'll have to use your ears. PTO rpms are generally about 80-90% of full throttle. Advance the throttle to full, then back off enough to hear a reduction in the rpms. That should get you reasonably close to 540 PTO output speed.

If my machine didn't come from the factory with a tach I might be so inclined as to add one. This thread explains how tiny tach

Likely you all do not realize many gray market tractors have 360,420.540,720,& 1000 selector speed combinations. Usually the second from the slowest speed is correct. The 720 rpm will heat up the gearbox so it's a problem. If the cutter is in good condition or new and it is not cutting the grass off clean then likely you are using a speed less than 540. Most tractors need to be run at 80% throttle for the power range needed for the PTO.
