Just in case anyone can use this little bit 'o info, many of the plastic drum's bungs that I've seen have provision for a 3/4" female std. pipe thread molded into the center of the larger plug. The bottom punches out, and you can then thread in a pipe.
As someone pointed out, some bungs have a fine thread, some a really coarse thread. I've messed with hundreds of these barrels, making rain barrels for a nature conservancy, so I sort of know what to expect. The blue barrels usually are a heavier plastic, even sometimes a 1/4" thick wall! Tough. Most have a raised lip (for stacking), which would hold water (they have a couple of little drain holes, but those clog up easily) so just cut a notch in the lip for drainage.
