55 gallon drum sprayer

I was thinking of making something like what you did, but with an electric 12 volt pump. I've never had one, so I don't know if it would work. Did you try them first?

What is a roller pump? It looks like the PTO powers it and the bracket on the bottom keeps it from spinning, but what does the bracket mount to?

I also don't understand the flush with oil comment. Do you have to run oil through it after you use it? Is that regular motor oil?

Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie, I did try an Electric ShurFlo pump. It would make about 50 psi. I didn't like the way it continuously cycled on/off.
It also got pretty hot too. With the roller pump, the pressure is constant and a lot better for spraying. Roller pumps are displacement pumps, thus they can operate at low rpms. Even when the tractor is at idle I can dial in 200 psi!
They do need to be flushed with oil (or anitfreeze like Bird stated) after using it to keep the internals from corroding.
I just use any motor oil. Pour some in and work it around by turning the shaft, then put the caps on. Good as new next time i use it. The anti-torque bar is bolted to the pump and when I connect the pump to the PTO on the tractor. the anti-torque bar just rests on the the three point hitch arm. It came with chains but this was much easier.

Thanks, that makes sense.

Where did you get the pump, and what price ranged do they go for? Anything special I should look for when I decide to buy one? Brand, material or size?

Thanks,
Eddie

I bought the pump at http://www.tractorsupply.com

2112023 COMPLETE 6 ROLLER PUMP KIT $122.38
Includes 6 roller cast iron pump. 5/8" quick attach PTO coupler, torque arm assembly with spring.

They also have a larger one too, but that would be overkill unless you are going to build a boom sprayer.

2112031 COMPLETE 8 ROLLER CAST IRON PUMP WITH 15/16" QUICK ATTACH $147.33

I have a similar setup, except bypass isn't teed to suction. It goes through other bung and has a loop with drilled holes for agitating wettable powders and keeping solutions mixed.

Eddie, the only brand I'm familiar with is the HyPro roller pumps and they make a bunch of different models; i.e., 6 rollers vs. 8 rollers, cast iron vs. other metals that are more corrosion resistant. And they move both a much greater volume as well as much greater pressure than the 12 volt Shurflo pumps. My brother had a 50 gallon rig with a Shurflo pump (50 psi) and I used it with both his Kawasaki Mule and my B7100 Kubota, but then I got a 25 gallon stand alone rig with a 3hp Briggs engine, a 6500 series HyPro roller pump, a gear box between the engine and pump to reduce RPM to 540, pressure regulator, filter, 100 foot high pressure hose and nozzle, etc. My rig was given to me by a neighbor because it had been abandoned by a former boyfriend of his daughter and had been sitting so long it was seized up and inoperable. The neighbor was a farmer who also had an account at a wholesale house, so he got me a new 6500 series pump for $75. The only difference in using one on my Briggs engine and one on a tractor PTO is the fact that they turn the opposite direction. You can buy the pumps ready to turn the direction you want, or you can simply and quickly take it apart, and put it back together by turning the innards the other direction. They're very simple, easy to disassemble, easy to rebuild, etc. Had I known what I was doing to start with, I would not have bought a new pump, but would have rebuilt the old one cheaper and it would have been as good as new. They're great, but of course they're made for clean liquid; not a trash pump. My rig had a filter (actually just a very fine metal mesh screen) between the tank and the pump. And you need a bypass back to the tank, of course. If you get the cheaper, cast iron model, as I did, when you finish using it, drain it, fill it with oil or antifreeze, then dump that out the next time you want to use it. There's lots of places on the Internet where you can order the pumps, Tractor Supply Co., and most local spray equipment companies have them. The link I gave is just one of many.

hobbyfarm,

A little far for you, but there is a place in Lexington NC that cleans, repairs, and will sell any type of plastic drum. They might ship it to you???? The name of the company is Cardinal Container. I don't have their number, but you might be able to get off of internet.

They will sell a 35 gallon drum for $17.00.

Check with a local jiffy lube or similar outfit. Around here, these guys get their windshield washer fluid in 55 gal plastic barrels and they gave me a few for free.

Howdy fig,
I was hoping that my neighbor DelfinoTX had a good local source for drums here in the Rio Grande Valley.
Last time I got a hold of some, about 25 years ago, I had a buddy that worked at Wilbur-Ellis (Ag chemical supply) and he gave me a few.
