Hello
I have a 5500 fwa that I traded for a few years back. It has been super reliable and easy to start, even in cold weather with a poor battery it starts in a few cranks.

A month ago I was at the farm with the SO and gave the kiddos a ride and everything ran as usual.

Last week I went to start the tractor and it cranked longer that usual, and died three times before it would stay running. It sounded different for 30 seconds or so then changed tone and sounded more or less normal so I proceeded to move the tractor to use the bucket. When I was off the tractor chaining to the bucket it just died fairly suddenly. Like it ran out of fuel.

No other noises from the engine, no pulsing or missing or skipping.

I checked fuel and there wasn't much on the stick so I added some and removed the filter located on the injector pump, the one with the knurled screw tap and wire holder with the little plastic strainer. It was rusted bad in there, so I got a new one of those and two new fuel filters. Drained all fuel, replaced with new.

I put a new battery in it and cranked it not expecting anything as it had been in the teens the night before and was about 25 degrees out but after 10 or 15 seconds it started up.

It ran as before, sounded off, not surging or missing just not right for about 30 seconds or so. Then changed tone and sounded ok, then after just a couple minutes died like it ran out of fuel.

I'm wondering who to contact regarding the fuel injectors and fuel injection on this tractor, Is there a guru Mahindra pump man on here or at a dealer somewhere?

Does anybody have the info on timing these pumps to the engine. Meaning if I remove the pump what do I need to know to get it back on correctly? Does anybody have a manual that describes this?

The pump has the following on the tag:

MICO Lic Bosch
F002 A0Z 270
PES4A95D320RS2000
Serial 2913000

We get these posts every winter. Just verifying you have winter fuel in it and you aren’t getting gelling? It sounds an awful lot like gelling. Even if you added new fuel it’s going to take some time to get the old stuff out of the lines etc.

Good point
The first time it did it it wasn't freezing cold out, second time it was cold.
Fresh fuel but no additive, other machines/pickup have not had problems with fuel that I am aware.

Brushhawg,

Have you checked the fuel flow at the petcock? Many Mahindra models have a fine nylon screen at the bottom of the fuel tank. The screen is accessed by unscrewing the petcock from the tank. The screen should come out with the petcock. I have seen many of these screens clogged to the point of greatly restricting fuel flow. This is especially critical in a gravity fed fuel system. Just my $.02

Definitely check for adequate fuel flow before you start messing with injectors or pump. Most of these problems are fuel related.

The "start and dies after short time" is the exact symptom for fuel flow restriction of some kind. You have enough to start it, but not keep running. Then enough will trickle in to start it again in a few minutes, and the cycle repeats.

Yes I pulled the petcock out, mine does not have the strainer and is not threaded for one. I have full flow of fuel from the looks of it.

Also I was unable to use the primer pump. I turned the knob but can't move it.

I have a 5520 and had a similar problem. My fuel line under the floor pan--open station--had deteriorated and was internally weakening and collapsing on itself. I imagined all sorts of things but a mechanic told me the newer fuels were playing havoc with fuel lines. He was right and a new fuel line fixed the problem.

Yours may just be typical winter gelling blahs already mentioned but if not the above is worth a consideration.

Its possible the supply pump is the culprit.. they are known to be a weak spot in the fuel system..
WHEN was the last time u added oil to the pump?? There are 2 types of Mico inline pumps.. 1 u add engine oil & 1 that gets fed from the engine.
It "sounds like" u have a supply problem. CHECK the fuel supply & lines.
The timing is pretty involved but I can tell u a short-cut..
If your interested just send me a prvt msg.. click on my screen name for contact options.
I've got 30+ years working in a fuel shop.

May just need to roll the pump.... quick way to check on timing issue. Also if it has a hand primer its very possible the seal has went bad in it and is sucking in air but it would have to be a lot for a sudden kill like that. If you see rust in the pump then that means there has been a decent amount of moisture build up either from sitting or from the fuel itself.

Just pull either the inlet or outlet banjo bolt & have a look at the threads.. any rust??
IF its "there" its everywhere..
BE SURE & tighten the hand primer back down.. it'll suck air if u don't..
IF u really wanna turn some wrenches.. get a 10mm wrench or 4mm Allen wrench & pull the side cover & have a look.. I think you'll be surprised at what u find..
