I'd be willing to bet that in a straight-line pull type of situation that the 3 point can take as much load as the machine generates. Any off-center or jerking type of pull would be better attempted with either the receiver or another reinforced piece of structure.

That's what I'm thinking. With a decent straight angle pull I'll try the 3 point first. Any odd angles I'll play it safe and use the receiver.

I made a bone headed move a couple of years ago pulling with the 3 point hitch...
I placed a lateral load on the lower hitch arms, which snapped off the connection point on the case of the machine. Fortunately the connection point was part of the brake case and not part of the main transmission case. Still cost me $2k.
