Has anybody replaced the bushings at home?

sure, most of us do.

How? are you driving them out with a brass punch? Using a puller of some type? Pressing them out? I don't want to damage the inside of the spindle.

a pipe, or whatever rod fits.
the inside of the spindle touches nothing... the bushings hold the spindle..
