5W-10W30/40 or 15W40?

I am getting a Kubota L3130 and plan to use Shell Rotella 15w - 40 in it with the first oil change. I am currently using it in my GMC K2500 6.5 turbo diesel and will switch my GMC 5.7 liter gas to Rotella when I exhaust my stock of oil I use in it. It gets hot in my part of Texas so I don't need the lighter weights. I could easily use straight 30w in the gas engine but it is simpler to use one oil for everything.

Why not just use Delvac, its only $5.88 a gallon.
I run it 7000 miles in my PSD, It is good oil with
a good additives package, although I think the amsoil diesel oil
might be a little better.

Just received delivery of my first tractor and am researching recommended lubricants and found this thread. I sell Toyotas and Chevys in Wash. state and we have been told that the new 3/4 ton Tundra will be available with a deseil but not until 2007. They will offer the 3/4 ton with gas V-8 in 2006. Waiting for more details and will pass them on when we know.

might be???? Based on un-used oil test, it is! At least there 15w-40 hdd&M oil. There Series 3000 is the best of the best here.

I agree with familyman and TresCrows on both topics. Most cars were 5w30 for the longerst time. Now due to EPA standards a thiner oil was needed and every car (lots) went to 5w-20. Now some are calling for 0w-20 oils.

I agree with familyman here.

( Just FYI, the first number, in this case 5, refers to the base weight of the oil. The second number is what the additive package extends the viscosity to. If you want to up your base viscosity, switch to 10w30 or whatever you like. Also, the greater the number spread the more the additive package is making up for viscosity-wise on its own, ie; 10w40 has more viscosity extenders than 10w30, etc. Therefore, oils with a narrower spread (including single weight oils) are better protectors in high performance applications. Pure synthetics are the exception to this rule. If hot weather protection is a concern, go with a higher base number or try a pure synthetic. )

I would use the world purity of the oil or less adds in an oil that as a larger spead or delta. As he stated this only works for group3 oils and below. The 100% synthetic oils (group 4 and 5) are a different world.

Now as 1075 stated (and I did a few days ago) that Mobil SUV and Delvac 1 are the same based on info on Mobil’s site.

Some people like Rotella and some like Mobil SUV (Delvac 1). Rotella is a group 3 hyrodro crack dino oil with a higher zddp. Mobil SUV has less ZDDP put a true group 4 oil.

If you are looking for high adds (ZDDP, P Vi) etc you can find better oils. But with better adds/better oil etc comes a higher price. Hence, you want better it is going to cost you.

GerardC --Why would you want to use such a heavy oil? Heat etc?????

The dual weights refer to viscosity ranges at 100 F and 210 F, originally. Now, it's 40 C and 100 C. So, a 5Wxxx oil is 5W at 40 C. A xxW40 oil is 40W at 100 C.

If you want better starting, particularly to ensure the oil goes quickly through small passages, use a lower 1st grade. The last few years this has been 5W. Use the manufacturer's recommendation at the higher end. The last few years this has been 30W.

The oil will ALWAYS be higher viscosity when it's starting out. So, even going to a 0W grade would be fine. Unless you use a synthetic though, you'll be using an oil with more and more additives that can break down if you go to a wide range oil.

I've bought a 5W40 Mobil 1 for the next change on my Benz that I initially used 5W30/15w50 mixed 50/50 to get roughly 10w40. In all my other engines, I now use a 5w30 Mobil 1, including my JD 4010.

More-less. Plus I was thinking that it would be nice not to have all the different grade oils to deal with.

I would say no, not in some of the new cars. Most new ones are 5w-30 and some are 0w-30. Why not just use a 5w-30 in all? You can get group 4 (I know I know) but the properties in this group are good for 90% of the temp etc you will need. Plus you can use some oils in both configurations (gas and diesel).

mantis - Will look for that info - sounds interesting. Toyota hasn't had anything that I felt comfortable with to pull my 9,000# load of Crawler tractor and trailer. A 3/4 ton diesel from Toyata sounds promising. Currently drive a Chev 2500HD.

Ps: I may be getting a little off the thread, but since replying to a post will add this.
