5w-30 synthetic

Thanks...

So again....

Amsoil is the "only" 5W30 Heavy Duty Motor oil that is rated to Diesel - CH and CI ratings?

The reason I ask this is everyone should be cognizant of the fact that most 5W30 Synthetic oils or conventional for that matter (Mobil 1 etc. ) are not Heavy Duty "HD" Motor Oil, and are rated only to "CF" for Diesel purposes...

They do not contain the high ratings in TBN performance for soot control in the diesel engine... You will be getting the wanted high and low temperature performance, pumpability, along with great Viscosity numbers however you have less dispersant control since most gasoline motor oils have TBN's in the 4-6 range vs. 9 - 12 in the HD Motor oils...

Again, just a word of caution /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif to check your tractor's owner manual for required Diesel rating for the oil.... If it says CF rating, then you should be "OK"...

good post but so far I do not see Amsoil's TBN # below 9 or 10 on any oil they sell (gas or diesel). Maybe a lower TBN in the cheaper oils! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For example, Kubota oils are CF-4, CF-2, CF ....rated and they do not even pass the API spec's for CH or CI. That being said, you can use a CH or CI oil in a CF.

Yes, ofcourse, you can... use CH & CI oil in CF requirements... all are backward compatible...... as in SL in SJ, SG etc...gasoline oils...

And, as said "most" do not have TBN's in the 9 + range.... Amsoil is probably one of the exceptions...so it sounds like you are safe in using that in the 5W30 configuration in the diesel.... But that may not be so in a 5W30 Synthetic in another brand, especially those engines that require CI-Plus rating requirements...

Again, just trying to ensure all are careful in using proper weight and type oils for the correct application....one size does not fit all...

he could also use a 15w-50 since the multi-grade "most" time or in better oils have a better add package. I would use any synethic (4 or 5) grade oil in my diesel.

Most 5w-30 in a group 4 and 5 have a great TBN. It is the grades 3 and below that you need to be careful.

Example, If you buy a 5w-30 oil at the same store you buy baby clothes ammo and dvd's at, chances are it will not have a high TBN.

Maybe I am missing something here and if so I invite the "oil gurus" to correct me.

However, I just checked the spec sheet on Mobile Delvac 1 synthetic on Mobil's web page and Delvac 1 is:
(1) expressly described as a "heavy duty deisel engine oil",
(2) spec expressly says it meets or exceeds API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4 and CH-4 (as well as lower) specs.

Unless there is something that I haven't understood, and assuming that the Delvac spec is not false, does it not follow that Delvac 1, as well as Amsoil, meets the Deisel CI-4 and CH-4 ratings?

Incidentally, the pour point spec on Delvac 1 is -45C (which perhaps explains why I have had pretty smooth and easy starting this winter, even during the coldest of cold snaps in my area).

BTW, I don't have anything against Amsoil. I haven't used it and hadn't compared the spec with Delvac since I originally decided, eight or nine months ago, to use Delvac 1. I just did so again and most of the #s seemed pretty comparable. So it does seem to me that some of the posts in this thread have gotten a bit carried away.

If I am mistaken, I shall truly appreciate Surge, Mike or anyone else pointing out my error.

what amsoil oil are you comparing delvac to?

Amsoil Series 3000 5w40 vs Mobil Delvac 1, 5w40

Amsoil has a TBN higher then 12, Mobil is 12
Amsoil Pour pt is -51 c, Mobil is -45 c
Amsoil has no ash, Mobil is 1.35
Amsoil vis @ 40 cst is 63.8, mobil is 102
Amsoil vis @ 100 is 11.5, Mobi l 14.8
Amsoil Noack Volatility is like 6, Mobil is over 15

Amsoil I know for fact has Ca between 3600Kppm to over 4,000ppm, Mobil Delvac is around 2100ppm

Amsoil has 1250 of P, Mobil is 1,100
Amsoil has 1350 Zn, mobil 1329
Amsoil is Easter (group 5) and Pao (group4) based, Mobil is a group 3 (hydro cracked dino)

Mobil is a good oil if you are not doing longer drains. If going longer, Amsoil's best diesel oil blow Mobil out of the water.

Mike: I don't doubt your figures, although various of them do not appear on the website specs that I compared.

BTW, doesn't viscosity refer to the ability of a lubricant to resist "shear" and, if so, don't the higher viscosity figures for Delvac 1 at each of the test temperatures indicate a superior shear resistance? Perhaps you can educate me on this.

The pour point, flash point and TBN values, which I think that I undestand, while not identical, are pretty obviously closely comparable, which is what I indicated in my earlier post.

Even granting the validity of the additional data you posted, the fact remains that Delvac 1 is clearly a "heavy duty deisel engine oil" that meets the CI-4 and CH-4 specs that earlier posts suggested were ONLY met by Amsoil. It seems to me that that is just flat-out wrong, regardless of whether other considerations may make Amsoil superior for extended change intervals; a subject on which I am not knowledgeable and gladly defer to you.
