I disagree how about the old GM 350 and 454 engines that were pretty much bullet proof.

Where were the 350 or 454 listed by the Original Poster? I must have missed this part of the original question?

If your disagreement is in regards to my claim that the 6.0 is the best base engine to date ever put in 3/4 ton truck? I will take a 6.0 over a 5.7 any day of the week and twice on Sunday's as it is simply better in every way. Heck I will take a 1999-2007 5.3 over a run of the mill 350 as well. Sort of a shame the 5.3 never commonly made it into very many of the lower spec'd 2500 series that were sold for a few years while the 2500hd's were sold simultaneously . Even if one likes the old venerable 5.7 better it was rarely the base engine offered so definite upcharge to obtain it. Many many years of 6 cylinders or 305's as the base engine on GM 2500's

Agreed. The 6.0 is far more reliable than the a 350 or 454. Or anything for that matter.

Seem to recall a lot of 350’s had cam problems.

It was mostly the 305's that had the cam problems. Not saying a 350 never did but never like the 305's

Ya that early 5.3 engine with piston slap was a GREAT engine that hardly burnt any oil.Laffin

The 1999 to early 2002'ish 5.3 with piston slap are not oil burners in any way. The piston slap does not really hurt a thing albeit it is annoying as heck when engine is cold till the engines warms slightly and the piston expands and noise disappears. Pretty much fixed and a non-factor by late 2002. Heck if it happened on a modern truck with direct injection would not be heard over the noisey direct injection system.

it is the 2008 and newer 5.3's with displacement on demand that can be the problem child oil burning engines.

I have owned 3 5.3 engines, currently own one in our 2015 Yukon XL. No issues with burning oil. I am not looking for another 5.3, but appreciate the input/opinions. I have honed in on the 6.0, with the 7.3 being my next choice.

My advise would be to stay away from the HEMI.... There are engine issues with these motors that Chrysler refuses to address.
Look it up and read about it.. lifter failure on the 5.7 and 6.4. I have one in my shop now with the engine tore apart.

I owned a brand new 2002 chevy 1500 with the 5.3 with piston slap that used 1.5 quarts every 1500 miles.Fact not fiction. My 2004 with the 5.3 uses little oil. 140,000 miles on my 2004 Go figure??

The milage on the truck should stated when people talk about good a engine is . Makes me laugh when people say it was a great engine I got 60,000 trouble free miles on it .that should be bare minium on a truck that cost 60,000 $$$.It's not even out of warrenty. I use to put on 60k in a year.

Not very punctual on maintaince . Some times let the oil go for 10 15 k miles . Can't realy justify doing oil change every month. If I do lots of high way miles I extend service intervals. But If its broke or worn I fix it right away.

There was a story I read in a FWD magazine about a hot shot who had a 7.3 disel with a Million 3oo thousand mile on it . Very interstering read loots of oil changes, tires , batteries.brakes etc. Not bad for a so called gutless turd.

Me and my son are rebuilding a 62 f350 flat bed with a straight 6, 4 on the floor that thing makes the 7.3 look like a rocket sled.🍻
