6.2 Liter Denali GMC. Anyone know them??

I have worked for GM for over eleven years now and have worked in four different locations for them. The GMC Denali is currently built in Arlington,TX where I spent over two years working after the launch of the 07 bodystyle which is still current. The direct run rate at this facility is well over 90 percent and has fewer problems per 100 vehicles than any other plant that I have spent time in. The Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon are also built at the Arlington plant. The body fit (gaps between the various sheet metal panels) is near flawless. The 6.2 engine is solid and powerful. The Arlington team takes alot of pride in building a great American large SUV. When it comes to power, comfort, size, and towing, the GM line of large SUV's win hands down IMO.

Thanks for that information. Sounds like they have a product to be proud of. What is a direct run rate??

Thanks,

John M

Direct run rate is when a vehicle makes it through the assembly process (start to finish) with no quality issues that requires it to be sent to off-line repair. It has to pass every inspection station from bodyshop, paint, chassis, trim, and final line. In other words, over 9 out of 10 units are ready to ship from a straight line build without any issues. That is amazing considering how complex the build process is. Hope this makes sense.:)

Great to get some direct from the source information rather than the usual "My neighbors-cousin's Denali blew-up in the mall parking lot" GM bash-trash BS you often get.

We traded our '06 Volvo XC-90 V-8 for our '08 Tahoe. The Volvo was Baaaad to the bone. The Yamaha V-8 was sick powerful and the transmission was great, but it was too small in the cabin for the family and all the gear. The Tahoe is much more roomy and more truck-like. My wife really likes it. I pushed for the Suburban, but my wife thought it was too big.

If GM would drop that baby DMAX in the Tahoe/Denali/Burb, they would sell so many of them!

John would have all the best there. A vehicle that his wife would like and a poweful torquey DMAX under the hood. Hold out a little longer John, it might be here next fall!

Well if you love the diesel but you want the room of a crew-cab with the upscale Denali features, and you want to stick with GMC, how about a GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali (new for 2011):

If you don't need the diesel but are interested in the 6.2L you can get the Sierra Denali in 1500 form (in either traditional 4WD or the Denali AWD):
2011 GMC Sierra Denali Pickup Truck Overview | GMC.com

Put a tonneau cover or full cap on the back and you get the features of the Yukon Denali without the third row but with a separate storage area (I always wondered how people with SUV's carry things like gas cans when you have to put them in the crew compartment).

I totally agree. I think there is a huge market for diesel powered SUV's among American farmers, ranchers, off-roaders, and anyone with something to haul. With the new EPA standards, it is highly unlikely that GM will offer the diesel anytime soon in the SUV line. I moved here to Indiana with the launch of the new HD series pickups that has the new Duramax option which meets all the new EPA standards. GM did not build a diesel truck for several months due to the higher regulations the government put on diesel emissions that all American auto makers had to pass. I love to go off-roading so I will admit to owning a Jeep Wrangler that is built in nearby Toledo, Ohio. They build diesel Wrangler's there every day that are for export only. I would LOVE to have one due to the low end torque (along with everyone else) but because of the emission standards that is not going to happen. The 6.2 is no slouch when it comes to pulling though. I love the throttle response the gas burner has.

Thanks for your input, I would also love see the small diesels here. I have '08 LMM Crew Cab and am impressed the 2011 changes.

With the Denali you get a constant four-wheel drive system. You can not turn it off or on and you do not get a low gear setting. If you can live with that, then a Denali is a nice upscale high content vehicle that can pull.

Reliability, well, all I can tell you is I am still driving my 2003 Tahoe Z71 and just pasted 167,000 miles. I provide normal maintenance and have replaced the alternator, battery, and font bumper because it was rusting through. It is not unique to hear stories of 300K on these vehicles, specially in non-rust belt states.

The best thing about it, everything works and it is paid for.

This is very well deserved. GM of past was not on par with the others. The earned the reputation they have fair and square. This is changing now. They have wised up. This turn around started around in 2006, especially in the trucks. I just bought a year too early and was left with a bad taste in my mouth so they will not get a dime from me. And there is that whole other reason but it political.

If you read my latest post on the HD GM trucks and the line of cars overall I am highly impressed. There is a world of difference in the 2007 3500 my neighbor has and the 2010 my friend just bought. Absolutely no comparison and the 2011 stuff is even better. They learned the hard way and now are getting it right. The question will be can they win back the confidence of the American Buyer. Export sales are what is keeping them alive.
