ELLSWORTH — A 6-year-old girl who fell out of a moving truck Thursday has died from her injuries, according to officials.
****** *****of Trenton, died Friday afternoon at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after sustaining a critical head injury when she fell out of her father’s pickup truck on Foster Street, Ellsworth police Sgt. Bart Tokas said Friday.
Her father, ****** *****, 35, of Trenton, was driving his 1989 Chevrolet east on the recently paved street shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday when he maneuvered around a sawhorse placed in front of a storm sewer cover, Tokas said. The passenger side door of the vehicle swung open, and the girl fell out and was hit by the truck’s rear tire, he said.
She was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth with a critical head injury and transferred Thursday night by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Tokas said.
“At this time, it appears she did not have her seat belt on,” Tokas said. “Speed is not considered a factor.”
The girl’s seven-year-old brother was in the middle of the truck’s bench seat during the incident, but he did not fall out of the truck and was not hurt, Tokas said.
***** ***** has been tested for alcohol or drug consumption, Tokas said, which is standard procedure for serious accidents. The results of those tests are still pending, he said.
Police have not determined if there were any witnesses to the accident aside from ***** *****and his son, according to Tokas. Anyone who may have seen the incident should contact the Ellsworth Police Department, he said.
The case in still under investigation.
