It is a "U" shaped channel that accepts spring loaded captive nuts at any location. They are made in a variety of thickness and strength. Basically, you can make any structural item that you want (within strength limits!), pretty easily. If it is permanent, You probably want to weld it or fabricate it. (Cheaper, potentially higher strength.)

mecano...erector set...Sorry guys. I think of them interchangeably.

I had a friend who collected these and in the early part of the 1900s there were many different versions. Most of them had some serious design flaws for children, but had varying design possibilities and limitations. Fascinating to play with.

Our property came with a lifetime supply of unistrut nuts and bolts and some channel. I look for channel on business remodels and renovation sites. If it is still straight, it still works.

Managed to pick up 150' or so of channel and a bunch of connectors, brackets, etc on Friday - was like new and they were throwing it out. Took 5 hours to take it all down but it was worth it.
