60 inch tiller on a BX

I have a tiller but if I were doing the task you mention here I would use my boxblade and then my RatchetRake. The BB will bust it up and keep it somewhat level and the RatchetRake will smooth it out to "throw the grass seed on it" point and then drive over it to press the seed in. Lot cheaper than a tiller.

With the soil conditions that you described, I would vote for the 48". I have very hard clay, so I use a 37" Muratori. I agree that sandy loam already in agricultural use is about the only conditions where a 60" would be o.k.

John Thomas is a good man and I have great respect for him. I have to disagree with him though. Those implements will loosen the soil considerably, but they are not going to break it into the really fine material that a rototiller is going to do.

I am in the same predicument as CompacTractorFan...I have a 23 HP PTO rating and the KK TG-60 I wan to get requires 25 HP PTO. Please post what you decide to go with.

My dealer actually sold me a 60" tiller along with a 60" MMM when I purchased my BX 25. I found out later that it is bigger than recommended by Kubota for the BX 25 (IIRC, 42" is what they recommend). I asked him about it and he said that the machine had plenty of power to run it. I suppose he should know, he's dealt with them everyday for years and knows their limitations. He gave me a 3PH at no charge and I have taken the hoe off and installed the 3PH and tiller. The BX has no problem lifting it and the PTO seems smooth. I will put it to the real test here in a few weeks. I will report how it goes. It is a Tonutti 60" gear driven unit.
