Spent the day changing oil, front axle, hydro fluid on my BX 25. While I had the energy I went ahead a drained the gear case on the 60" MMM, then I read the manual to find out the correct oil to use and the manual states to use SAE 90 (API GL5)....well guess what no one around here carries the GL5, I can find SAE 90 but rated GL1. I have appx. 1 gallon of 80 / 90 (GL5) left over from the front axle. Whats everyone else with a MMM using?? Will the SAE 90 (GL1) work? Could I use the 80 / 90 oil instead??? Whats the difference between GL1 and GL5??? Sorry for all the questions just want to get it right....Thanks

I put Amsoil gear lube in mine, but I can't tell you exactly what weight it was. I looked it up, most likely it was 75w-90 weight sythetic.

Waiting to hear other thoughts on this. I drained mine this weekend and hesitated to fill it when I saw the SAE 90, I've also got synthetic 75-90 and can't believe it would hurt it but I'm interested in hearing other opinions.

Exactly what I put in about a year ago. Shouldn't be any issues.

Use your leftover 80W90 gear oil since you already have it.No worries, you'll be fine!Good Luck!

I use lucas 80w90 gear oil. its gl5 rated. I wouldn't use gl1 rated only oil. The gearbox is high speed and high torque.

reason:
API GL-1 : for service in automotive-type spiral bevel, worm gear axles, and some standard transmissions, operating under conditions of low pressures and sliding velocities. rust and oxidation ibhibitors, foam supressors, and pour point depressants may be used, but friction reducers and extreme pressure agents must not be used.
API GL4 : for hypoid gears and similar,operating under both high-speed, low-torque and low-speed, high-torque conditions.
API GL5 : similar to GL4,but under more severe conditions. applies to cond. encountered in hypoid gears and other operating under high-speed, high-torque.

A 20HP gearbox is not "high torque".

Thanks everyone for the help, refilled the gearbox on the MMM with the leftover SAE 80/90 GL5 and put the MMM back under my BX25. Just a quick note I was ready to experience WW3 attaching the mower but didn't it went on fairly easy but did notice the blades didn't look like they were adjusted right so I started playing with the adjustment and it was a nightmare after about an hour I thought I was close enough so in the process of getting up off the floor I fractured my ribs on the right side. I did get the grass cut before my wife forced me to go to the ER. Go figure LOL.
