60" MMM Blades

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

According to my owner's manual, that is a 30.2 mm nut! I thought that a metric socket would be what I would need, but it is a 1-3/16" nut. Imagine that!!

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

The air powered impact wrench is a great tool, I love them. For anyone that hasn't had much experience with one I would like to give you this warning. A good quality impact wrench can easily over torque the blade mounting bolts. It can stretch the bolt or even break it off in the housing. It's best when remounting your blades to run the bolts down with the impact and then use a hand torque wrench to torque the bolts to the specified torque. The Operator's Manual for your specific mower model should tell you the ft-lbs to torque them to. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

A couple of other ways if air or large wrench is not available -
use a torch - propane/acetalyne - to pinpoint heat the NUT only - it'll actually "grow".
Or - use a hammer and a large pinpunch on the flat of the nut at the edge where a wrench would make contact; work around the nut hitting each flat as you go. This is the basis of how an impact wrench works. Try it before you laugh - you'll be surprised!

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

A 30mm socket, a 15" breaker bar and a two foot pipe were no match for the nut holding the blades. I guess it took about 15 minutes to change the blades.
The old blades had a few nicks but I was amazed they were still holding an edge. I'll drop them off a repair shop and have them sharpened and balanced for next year.

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

Where did you get the set of blades for $32.00. When I look for them online I keep coming up with prices around $28.00 for each blade. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Also, does anyone have a source to buy the 30mm impact socket individually or am I stuck paying $80.00 for a whole axlel set?

Davis Equipment here in Ashland, KY. I even told him I thought it would be closer to $60 for the set. FYI, they are Kubota blades too if that really matters.

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

I use a 30 mm wrench to remove my blades. Before reinstalling use a little anti-sieze compound on the threads. I sharpen my blades with a good old flat bastard double cut file. Had an old timer tell me filing will hold an edge better than heating the blade up when using a grinder to sharpen blades

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

The size of the nut is 30mm. Just did mine this week. Ensure you make a note of the washers and torque spacer before you disassemble.

Re: 60\" MMM Blades

Are you sure it wasn't $28.00 for the set? My dealer has been selling me all three blades for thirty something dollars. Also, this may not be exactly right, but, I bought a 1/2 drive 1-3/16" single socket at Sears that seems to work just fine on my impact to remove the blades. I think is was less than ten bucks, not sure. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
