Nearing retirement, I began to wonder how many miles I have driven just getting to work and back. After 40 yrs of driving 30+ miles each way to work every day, that comes out over 600,000 miles. Combination hwy/city and assuming avg 50 mph, that comes out to over 12000 hours (over a yr and half, 24 hrs/day) just getting to work and back. That could have been a lot more tractor seat time. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif You guys who are or have been truckers would think nothing of it. But it is still a little amazing to me.

Never thought of totaling up the miles I drove while working. I worked for the same company 37 years before I retired. Drove over 40,000 miles a year for work. That's about 1,500,000 miles. The only consolation I had was it was their vehicle and their time. If I figured it right they paid me 12 years of them 37 years just to drive to and from jobs. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Add to that staggering number, the amount of hours spent eating, sleeping, in the restroom, paying taxes, and visiting the inlaws. (Notice how visiting inlaws came below/after paying taxes?)

I guess it pays to look at life as a journey and not a destination.

Man,

I don't EVEN want to add it up. That is a lot.

To me, it is the time. Where I live and work it can be anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3 hours one way.

That, my friends, S U C K S.

It is a journey!

Bill, I have over half that many miles on my current truck that I bought new in Dec. 1995. I think it's amazing that I've spent more money on fuel, oil changes, tires, etc than the truck was when it was new.

One of these days, I'm gonna wash it... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In the 26 years I've been working full time I've never lived more than 4 miles from any of my employers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

David, that must be great to live that close to the job. Sometimes I wonder whether our current zoning laws do more harm than good. I always thought it must have been nice for the store owners years ago who lived upstairs over their stores. Most of my life I drove from 16 to 22 miles each way to and from work.

Jim - I remember you saying you drive quite a distance each day. Sounds like we are alike, buy a new one and drive it until it is ready to roll over. Amazing how long one will go when taken care of. Neither my '87 Bronco with 208,000+ miles when I traded it or my '97 F150 with 147,000 + miles when I wrecked it last year required any oil between 5,000 mi changes. Both gassers. Bought the diesel last year for 2 reasons, diesel was 10-15 cents cheaper than regular at the time (boy that plan fell thru /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ) and I plan to buy a 5th wheel camper in a couple years when I retire. That plan I am still working on. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

20 miles one way is my limit, if I have to drive further than that, either I move or change jobs. Life is too short.............
Even so, in the last 8 years I've been with this company, I've driven about 150,000 miles just getting to and from - sad............

For 20+ years, I lived less than 1000 yards from my employer. MY DAD!

Then I got a real job. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Now I live approx. 25 miles from our office, and some jobsites are 4 or 5 states away. (General contractor/estimator) I average 40,000+ miles per year to and from work. I don't like the miles but I do like the fat paychecks.

4 years, one month, 11 days till retirement! Then I can walk to work. (Shop's in the back yard!)
