I think what he's saying Junk is that at 430 feet they hit water and he drilled 90 feet deeper to have water storage.

That makes sense now that I am awake and have re read the post. I don't know how many gallons of water a 4" diameter x 12" hole will hold, but I am certain that at the depth and quantity that the drillers report, he will never run out of water.

400' deep 4" hole would hold 258.8 gals. of water or .6472 gals. per foot.

Thats some serious footage. My well is 60 feet and cost me 23 a foot. What size pump will you need? I'm thinking 3hp...

My well is 480' and I have a 1 1/2 HP pump set at 400'. I was watching "This Old House" a few weeks ago and they showed a new type of pump with an electronic controller. The pump had the ability to change pumping volume to meet demand. They claimed that this new pump design was only about $100 more than a standard pump set up and that the additional cost was offset by the electrical savings. I believe that this is the web page for the one that they featured, but it is only a guess.

That would depend on the static water level. The pump is only lifting the water from there to the point of use. If you have a pump set at 400 ft but the static is 50 ft you don't need that big of a pump.

That is correct, My static water level is 180' so they will set the pump at about 250' and only use a 1 or 1 1/2 HP pump. That would mean the the water level would have to drop 70' before the pump would run dry. With 15gpm flow that will never happen.

This saves on the cost of pump, electric and pipe, wire and rope to hang the pump.

4 years ago when we had to drill (hand dug well went dry during a drought) we went to 440 feet and was getting dust. Driller asked "What you want to do"? I said stop and try over there (50' closer to the ridge). He hit 18 gpm at 130'. Went on down to 180' and hung the pump at 160'. His rate was $8 per foot for a good well + $12 foot for casing, and $4.00 per foot for dry hole. Then we had to pay $75 to have the dry hole sealed. Ended up with a 3/4 HP pump.

I have a Goulds 1 1/4 HP submersible....been in the well since 1988.

That sounds like a variable frequency controller which changes the RPM to more or less maintain a constant pressure. There are number on them on the market although I'm not up on them much. There are also variable speed constant pressure pumps. And there are Cycle Stop Valves that are IMO the best choice for constant pressure.
