I agree with daTeacha, hyd fluid isn't changed at 50 hours. You should only be looking at a fuel filter, oil filter, oil change, and hyd filter. Other that that, you have the standard grease job, checking tire pressure, check fluid levels, etc. Pretty basic stuff that will save you about $400 if you do it yourself.

My dealer strongly urged that I have them do the 50 hour service, so they could show me the ropes and I'd know how to do stuff. They came 26 miles here and did the service for $225 (TCs 26DA) which I thought wasn't too bad. About a month later, they went out of business, and now the nearest dealer is 50 miles away. A couple weeks ago I hit my dealer's quick dial on the cell phone by accident and got an answer. They told me they are back in business and a New Holland Dealer. New Holland subsequently informed me that they might be back in business but are not a NH dealer. I hope there are no further dealer surprises down the road. I just paid (or will pay) for a 50-mile-each way service call. I don't like doing any work myself other than routine maintenence while the tractor is still under warrantee. It looks like most jobs can be done by the owner, but the way things are engineered today, who knows? It does scare me a bit, because I intended this tractor to last a lot longer than me. Tractor dealers are getting more and more distant from each other and it's not a good thing for owners or prospective owners. Add to that the fact that every line has a gazillion different models and future parts availability looks VERY uncertain. If I were a young person buying a tractor expecting it to last a good many years, I'd be very much afraid of buying.

A 50 hour service on the average New Holland compact tractor should take a reasonably talented mechanic (I can call them that, I are one) not over one hour start to finish. Engine oil & filter, fuel, hydraulic & hydro filters, grease tractor & loader, check clutch & brake adjustment, check air filter, replace if (seldom) required. Check wheel hardware torque and air pressure. Check & top off power steering oil, hydraulic oil and front axle oil. Check antifreeze protection & coolant level. Visual check of entire machine ongoing throughout the process. Done. First time for a technician on a particular tractor model gets an extra half hour. Any other work should be submitted for warranty or billed additional to the 50 hr service. Yes, the quote you were given is a ripoff. And guys who read my posts know I don't say that much here.

Wow, my dealer charged $0 labor for the 50 hr service on both of my tractors and the RTV.

That just means the cost of doing them was included in the purchase price. :)

I'm going to do the service myself.

Lube, Oil and filters for now and I'll do the hydro fluid change in the spring. (probably another 20 hours from now; unless mother nature has different ideas for snow this year)

Thanks!!

My new 2008 super duty's first maintenance cost me $80.00 and that was about 5 times more expensive than the tractor. Using the same ratio the Super Duty would have cost me $2100 for the first service if I had it done by the NH dealer (4% of purchase cost).

if its diesel then you go through 18 qts of oil per change - and if its synthetic
better take out a loan - :D i was laughing when i realized I didnt buy enough oil - better yet couldnt find enough locally

Yeah I got a PSD. I think my 08 F350 is just 15 qts though.

If you can change the oil on your car, then doing the work on your tractor is easy.

I just took my time, did one fluid and or filter a day and in no time I was done!
