I am new to the forum, but I have gained alot of info by reading threads over the last three years. I bought a 6284 approximately 2 years ago. Last week the pto quit working. When I turn it on under low rev's the battery light comes on. THis makes me think that it is an electrical problem, but I have not found one. Does any one have any ideas.

Also, I would like to get a backhoe for it. I am going to use it to plant trees and put in flower beds. I want the undercarriage mount. Does anyone have a reccomendation i.e. cub cadet backhoe, woods etc. Money is a little issue, but quality and performance is more important.

I've got a 6284 also.
I can't provide a lot of help on the PTO but my first thought would be to check out your "parts diagram" included with the O&M.
That may give you a tip on what way to go for the "electric clutching".
Or... if it's less than 2yrs, still should be under warranty. ( Mine will be 2 this Oct.)
I've got a backhoe and it works great. It's a Cub brand but Woods makes 'em.
I had it on my 7264 and kept the hoe when I got the 6284 (direct swap)

Over all , how do you like the machine ?
So far , no problems with mine but I need a front snowblower .

My dad and I spent the last two days tearing down Pto clutches and gears. Once we had every thing apart we noticed that a gear that drives the transaxle was getting destroyed. There was big chuncks of metal in the bottom of the pan. My two year warranty was two weeks past, so originally the dealer was not going to back it, but know they are going to come out to the house and look at it on Monday. I beleive that there is a modification that they need to do. I will know more after Monday, but it does look like it will be covered. I will give you more info after monday.

I loved the tractor until know. You cannot beat that cat engine. It has alot of torque, maybe more torque than the tractor can handle. I will make that decision once I know more, but right know I think I will try to trade it in after it is fixed. If I trade it in, I have a cub cadet snowblower that I bought with the tractor. I only used it once two winters ago. If I sell it, you can look at the snowblower if you would like and make an offer on it.

Man, sorry to hear about that. ( I don't know weather the get scared or not ?)
Any ideas what caused the failure ? Do you use a large "load " on the PTO ? re: tiller, etc.

Holy smokes ... two weeks out of warranty, I think they should "step up".
One thing about Cub/ my Dlr. is they have always gone the second mile, in my opinion. I had a 7264 prior to this one ( with numerous problems) None of the problems on the 7 were "terminal"...just little stuff.

How many hrs. do you have on yours ?

Yes , I'd be real intrested in the blower if you want to part with it.

Best of luck to ya and keep us posted .

I'm not trying to dissuade you, but I would never put a backhoe on my 6284. First off, the tractor is way too underrated to do much, second the cub backhoe is too expensive with the rails, and third, you can't even dig a sewage line with it, because it won't go low enough. I live in the mountains, and i think the UBC is the same for your area.

Now if you just playing with it, go ahead. I have owned this tractor for two years, and would have ditched it for a better tractor this year, except I heard a rumor that cub might be trying to recap market share and might have some generous incentives in Aug-Sep. The newer tractor has 6 more horse, and the loader and backhoe specs are alot better.

But I don't know alot about tractors, but I have talked to about 30 dealers, and my local cub service guy and I are on a first name basis, and he has had my tractor in his shop quite often. He told me not to put one on it, that I would regret it.

Could you expand on your many trips to the Dlr.( for the 6284) ?

As far as the BH ... maybe your looking for something more that this machine can provide ? You mentioned 35 or even 50 hp.
I've used my BH alot on both the previous Cub and the 6284. For what they're intended ...I think it does fine.
I've installed drain lines ( none deeper than I could dig) and quite abit of other digging , with no "ill" affects. I used it to finish clearing stumps from my land but granted on the big ones ( stumps) you're gonna have a little time invested... I've dug some oak stumps that are "scary" kind of big for this machine. I would'nt live long enough to do it by hand . lol

Agreed, the BH is expensive but what isn't, weather it's Green , Blue, Yellow or whatever. Heck, I even hate to pull into the gas pumps $$$$.

Again, I don't make my living with it but for my use , no regrets. ( so far)
If I've got a "big dig" ; a 580 or 590 Case does it.

I understand what you are saying about using it the way you are, but it takes alot longer. You are fortunate to have a larger piece of equipment that you can rely on to do the bigger digs with, I can't afford two tractors right now.

6284 issues:

Within three days of delivery of my unit to my house, I have a coolant leak. The coolant jug cracked.

Two weeks later I had it replaced, it took some time for the part to arrive.

Three weeks later my belly mower fell off my tractor. The dealer picked it up and fixed the issue. The the pins got stuck on the lift, and bent the bars. The dealer picked it up and fixed it. Then the coolant became an issue. Turns out there was a crack in the hose. Dealer fixed it. Then the belly mower broke again, the belt came off, and kept coming off. The dealer couldn't figure out why, and my three emails to cub support when largely unanswered. They installed an additional pulley on the deck and it seemed to work for awhile. Then the 3 point broke on the tractor, it fell down when I was using my FEL. The dealer fixed it. Then the tractor hydraulics seemed to keep messing up. 3 sets of filters, a complete change of fluid, and another tune up by the dealer and it still doesn't work right. Then the belly mower spring to the idler arm pulley broke about every time I cut the grass, and then after it was replaced twice the bolt broke. Oh yeah, and I tried to remove the FEL to just cut grass, and the thing kinda locked up on me.

That is the short version. I only have 165 hrs on the tractor now. It is primarily used to cut grass (8 acres), move dirt around in the field, and to clear snow inthe winter. It has also been used to try and level out ground/excavation for some projects in my yard. I also used it to move shale and gravel in my driveway.

I would be more than happy to discuss this in depth if needed, but I did not keep accurate records at the time. In hindsight, I wish I would have.

I follow the book to the letter for maintenance, I afraid not too.

You may be right, I may have purchased too small a tractor for my needs, but the tractor was advertised that it would do what I needed it to. The smaller 5000 series tractor were able to have a BH too, until they found out later that it was twisting the frames on them (dealer told me this). He also advised me not to put one on mine, saying I wouldn't be able to get 36" down with it (with gravel base and making a flat bottom). I was looking at the 32hp because that is the only thing listed on their site as of the other day, but they did mention 50hp CUT. As far as attachments go for this tractor, I have to stay at the 5' mark for a rear blade, a one bottom plow, and a smaller FEL. This is what the dealer recommends for the tractor. Some other pieces I have been looking at getting need a bigger tractor. A larger mower for one thing. 5 hours on the tractor straight cutting grass kinda stinks. I know people do more, but their crazy.

I forgot to add that I bought a cub after looking at kioti, kubota, new holland, Mihandra, and Deere. I decided on the cub because the dealer closest to my house sold them, and he guaranteed pick up and redeliver if it ever broke down. I am glad I had that agreement prior to purchase.

I have learned since then that there were significant differences between the brands in regards to hydraulics. With the new yan/cub, it seems like they have fixed those issues. I didn't plan on ever buying another cub after my experiences, but those new models look real good in comparison to other models of similar HP. I just have to find out the cost now.

Knock on wood, but the Cat engine on the tractor seems to run flawlessly. And when I change the oil it never seems all that bad or that dirty.

PA,
That's too bad about all the troubles but it sounds as if you took the mower out of the equation ; your troubles would be down a bunch ? Maybe the mowers are junk ?
I mow about the same with mine but I use a Ford 930B ( 60") rear finish mower. It works great. As a matter of fact, I mow some stuff I shouldn't.
I'm not sure what your Dlr. means (36" ditch). I've done that with no trouble but understand, you can't do that 6 or 8' behind the machine. ( you have to move more)
I know the hydraulics are fickle with Cub, better stated I guess dirt. I had to chg. the filters in my 7264 more often than the book says ? The machine would get "jerky" and the filters were the cause ?

I looked at all the small machines before buying some years back. I almost bought a Kubota.... but the Dlr. tried to give me a sc*ewing, so I walked.

For the record , I don't own a 580 Case but 'have got access to one.

With finger crossed, my 62 has been doing well ... hope she holds out .

I hope you get one to fill your needs.
