64 Ford 4000 Temp Gauge

It is a 4000 industrial 4cyl gas with SOS transmission.

My 4000 was exactly the same. Here's a couple of pictures before I sold the "beast." I was never so happy to see a tractor leaving on a trailer as I was to see this ol' smokin' Ford go. The "Select-O-Leak" transmission was not one of my favorite features.:rolleyes:

Here's a scan of a photo showing power steering components, but it also shows the location of the temperature probe (circled in red).

That photo shows the exact location of the temp sender in a 134,144, 172 or 192 cu.in. Ford 4 cylinder engine. There is a provision for the sender to be installed there, no doubt.

Well you guys are correct. It was behind my ground wire so I didnt see it on the corner by the plugs. I was able to get the new temp gauge installed thanks to everyone that gave me input.

Now a new problem has shown up.

I lost all electircal power. No starter Not Aux light when I turn the key. Everything was running fine yesterday and turned over once today before aux light went dead so I am charging my battery right now to see if that is the problem first but any other ideas as it did not seem like the battery was dead when it turned over today. It seems like a pretty simple system so I would think only voltage regulator, battery, starter, and altenator.

After putting the battery back on this morning everything started up and ran fine until around 2pm today then the same thing happened. I try and start and I hear a click so I test the battery and it has full charge but I have no light when I turn the key to the on position any ideas?

it's not on the back, but on the same side as the spark plugs.

I have a 63 4000 4 cyl I'm working on right now.

put a volt meter on the battery and try to start.. does battery drop?

if no, then check cables and ends to the solenoid, and to ground.

if I read correctly you might have moved your ground cable to replace the temp sender.. did you find a good ground for it.. or a rusty sheet metal ground?

I put the ground back in the same spot attatched to the frame that holds the gas tank up?

I put the battery back on charge again tonight to see if that changes anything. I will try the voltmeter in the morning to see what happens when i try and start. Any other ideas let me know and thanks for the help tractorbynet is an amazing community for information.

Go back to that ground connection and make it clean, bright and tight. Then do the same for the rest of the battery cable connections. The probabliity of your new electrical problem being coincidental is very near zero.

Ditto that.

sheet metal connections are usually my 2nd choice.. but keep in mind.. that fram is connected to chassie and probably rusty there as well.. and the starter gets it's ground thru chassie, then that rusty connection to the gas tank frame.. then that ? dirty connection to the battery cable.

on some large tractors some people run another ground cable from the chassie ground where the battery hooks to over to a starter hold down bolt.

likely not needed in this application.. though as rick points out.. good clean grouinds are.

I moved the ground cable and problem seems to have gone. Only issue left is to get the exhaust manifold connection to the muffler fixed and should be good to go for the spring.

Thanks for all the help. Im sure I will have more questions in the future
