And the Titan came in at $6k. With a 4 month wait! At least we’re heading into fall- if get it in the middle of winter LOL

I’ve been surfing what’s out there for a dual spindle cutter in the 7-8’ range. This will be behind a TYM 574/FEL with 44.7 claimed PTO hp and around 3000# lift 24” behind link ends. My primary reason for looking at dual spindles is to keep the length behind me minimized to 7-8’, as opposed to same width single spindles being very unwieldy at 11-12’ long! Multiple horse paddocks to be mowed, with occasional downed limb munching and the Bahia gets out of control at times- too few horses for the acreage. LOL Finish mower wouldn’t be up to the task.

I may have narrowed my choices to the following in lift type, but open to other suggestions I may have overlooked. The BH SQ 84T has been discontinued or it would be on the list as well. Seems any other double spindle 8’a get quite heavy and require more hp. And there are only two ds 7’out there- listed below. Again, sticking to lift types for maneuverability sake.

Iron Craft/Titan 1808

Bush Hog 2107

LandPride RCD1884

The LP is kinda weird being offset 10” to the right but I think it might be nice to see more easily just where that side is, unless I forget about the asymmetry and smack things with it thinking it’s the other side LOL

The IC/Titan and BH are 1200# and significantly heavier built than the LP at 900#. The LP tip speed is significantly lower at 11700 fps vs a good 15.5-16000 for the Titan and BH respectively.
The Titan is the only 8’er I’ve considered (due to weight and hp), but hp requirements seem adequate*. The BH and LP and require less because they’re only 7’.
The BH has a single wheel and may be “tippy”, whereas the Titan and LP have two.

Probably least important is the IC/Titan may be considered an off brand, but I could care less as long as it performs reliably. Bush Hog and Landpride are almost household names, which you have to pay for.

So if any have been down this road and/or would like to offer up any insight or opinion that would be much appreciated :)

The Land Pride unit is essentially Land Pride's clone of the Bush Hog Squealer SQ84T. It does have the advantage of offset to one side so you can cover your tire tracks easily on one side, and reduces the number of gearboxes from the normal three required for a twin-spindle mower down to two gearboxes. This isn't so heavy your tractor couldn't handle it and it will be fine for cutting overgrown hay fields and some small saplings. That cutter is also noticeably less expensive than an 8' twin spindle.

You could probably run the Bush Hog 2017 or that light duty Titan 8' cutter as long as you have loaded tires, and be very careful with turning on any slope. I would not run a medium-duty full 3 point mount 8' cutter like the Bush Hog 2208/2308, Deere MX8, etc. as they will be too heavy. You can get most 8' twin spindles in a semi-mount setup where you connect the two lower 3 point links to the mower to pull it instead of having a long tongue, but have the hydraulic cylinder and weight-carrying tail wheels of the pull-type model so your tractor never carries the full weight of the mower. The only downside is price, those are pricier cutters that you probably won't be able to find used in a semi-mount setup, figure about $10k for a ballpark figure for one new.

Thanks mo1. Yesterday I decided on and ordered the BH 2107.
I started thinking that I was pushing my luck power wise on trying to cut 8' after all so I nixed Titan and never considered the medium duty 8's with my hp. Hopefully the single wheel of the BH won't result in scalping much. My property here in Florida is fairly flat, and I wouldn't be transporting lifted much so tippyness isn't a thought when mowing. (Loading is a whole nuther thing- might consider some wheel spacers also) Another reason for my wanting lift type is for ballast while doing heavier loader work- while trying to not back into too much LOL. So semi would also be out as an option. Regarding price, the LP should be less expensive, but the availability has dried up and they're asking a premium! Not to mention 5 month wait or half way across the country shipping!

Does anyone have insights on single versus double spindle rotary cutters? The cutter tip speed on the 8-foot double spindle I'm considering is 15,000 FPM, compared to 12,000 FPM on the 7-foot single spindle. Does this increase in speed lead to better lift and, consequently, a cleaner cut? Also, does the double spindle tend to windrow, and how well does it perform when backing into dense brush? I'd appreciate any thoughts!
