( I was driving in the 60's, and I was not paying $.40 for a gallon of gas. I never saw a price higher than 19.9 (and that was for 101 Octane) until the 70's.

As a kid in H.S. (in the 60's) I pumped gas at a few gas stations. Both I and the gas were "teenagers". )

I remember regular leaded selling for 13.9 cents a gallon and
Ethyl (premium) selling for 17.9 a gallon.

Remember the "Gas Wars" and S&H Green Stamps?
Free Coffee Mug with a 10 gallon fill-up? I worked at a Gulf station back in the 70's and we sold gasoline for 10 cents a gallon. Of course the catch was that you paid for it in silver coins. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Boy, I started a good thread for a change. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Folks in the know around here (Toledo, Ohio) are predicting $3.00 for regular unleaded by the end of the week.

Average Fleet Fuel Economy in Europe is 42 miles per gallon, in Japan it is 47 miles per gallon.

If the USA had a fleet mileage record like Europe or Japan, they'd be forced to give gasoline away to get rid of it.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What is busting the USA is the gas guzzling SUV mentality..... where you cannot even purchase a vehicle (besides an imported moped) that even get the average fuel economy of Europe and Japan... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Bates I don't know where you got your #'s from but they are completely not true. Here is just one site that shows you are wrong.

Unfortunatly, as bad as it gets we still pay for it.... We need it, so maybe we cut corners to buy the gas or a large percentage of vocal America can simply afford it... Its going to take something big to correct the situation. Everyone here has had ideas and points about how they would recomend fixing it, but in the end nothing will be done as long as we buy it at the high prices..Everyone complains about the economy, but it must be pretty good if we can swallow gas prices 3x post 9-11, while home prices soar at the same time.. Like I said, its gonna get bad, the economy will need to crash, people loose their homes, their jobs, etc... Sounds like Mad MAx, huh? Untill then, the minor advancements in Bio and Ethenol will be all we get..

Sorry for the doom and gloom, but thats the way I see it.. If someone buys your product as fast as you can produce it, why would you lower the price??

Read this information before you make up your minds.
Ethanol isn't the answer. There are many variables. Corn requires massive amounts of fertilizers and pesticides. Growing climate and soil quality vary tremendously.

Solar distillation of hydrogen is the only renewable that I can get excited about right now. Water is free. Sunlight is free.

And the avg CAR in Europe weighs about 2800 lbs and has NONE of the "safety" BS that gets forced down our throats...running engines of about 2.3 liters! And besides...where do they have to go to? Germany is only twice the size of the state of Georgia..Big place aint it? And Japan?? Its just "over crowded"..not "over propertied". The last airport they built was OUT IN THE OCEAN..on a man made island!!

In Japan you cant even OWN a car if you dont have somewhere you can park it off street..and a garage ( because of property costs) might cost a MILLION or more. Motorcycles were at least..limited to nothing larger than 500 CC.

Tourists fly into NYC..and want to "see the town"..and ALSO...see Yellowstone NP..and the Grand Canyon! They have no concept of how big the USA really is!

I have a Pontiac Bonneville out in the garage...its our "sunday go to meeting car" and for nights on the town..with a 3.8 liter engine and its a BIG CAR...consistantly gets 32 MPG
