Compared to peoples wages, fuel is actually CHEAPER now than it was in the 1960's.

Back when gas was 30 cents a gal if I earned 10,000 a year I would need to earn 40,000 a year today just to buy the gas at todays price of 2.50 a gallon.
2.50 a gal is an increase of over 800 percent of the price of gas.
I can assure you that my income has not increased any where near 800 percent during that time.
I just don't buy the theory that todays prices are less they were yesterday when adjusted for inflation.

WHAAAT????? I hope/think this was a joke?? 90% of the cattle in the world are fed out on processed feed. Hay is important but your processed feed is where your gains come from in cattle. We would go broke, as would most commercial producers, in no time if we relyed on hay only to get our cattle ready for market.

With regard to horses the performance horses have to have a good processed feed to get enough calories and the right amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Processed feed makes the animal world go round.

Having a bad week at the office??

You know what I meant. we've been through that thread before. Horses in containment, given processed feed and not allowed free choice and turnout are cribbers. You would be too with boredom set in.

Lets digress somewhat.

I agree with BTU's created vs. BTU's used in process. What I am referring to is not just the plant itself, but the whole process vs. energy used.

Look at it this way...

Land itself.
Taxes.
Mortgage payments.
Fertilizer.
Herbicide/Pesticide.
Equipment.
Maintenance.
Fuel for equipment.
Labor.
Trucking.

Of course I'm not rolling in nor rolling out Subsidies paid directly to the grower, depreciation or Mother Nature. All that before it gets to the Ethanol plant. Besides, farm machinery today uses diesel not ethanol. I'll agree that ethanol plants can make money on the short view but factoring in all the fringe liabilities, petroleum would have to be substantially higher than it is at present to make ethanol profitable for anyone other than the initial investors.

Of course this thread isn't about horses nor ethanol, it's about $7.00 diesel and, I just cited a case study by the ATA and Stamford University. I'd certainly hope that it never reaches that level or every fuel tank whether large or small will have to be secured so that "fuel thieves" won't abound.

Just the opposite here! When I started working as a young man...I made LESS that $100 a week...actually $85 a week..so even with overtime I was making less than $5500 a year total...and HI octane gas was selling for 38 cents a gallon. 37 years later..when I retired I was making MORE than TEN TIMES as much...but gasoline..even hi octane WASNT selling for $3.80 a gallon..!!!

Look at the whole picture of inflation. Being young I have justa few years to compare. I can tell you that fuel was certainly cheaper for me 10 years ago. The net is what folks have to look at. Taxes have risen, prices for goods have adjusted up and down, but the real kicker is we are having to pay for things that we didn't even have to ask for in the past. Take health insurance as one point. 10 years ago when we bargained a contract health insurance was a moot point. The company was going to give us good health insurance at a good price. It was rarely ever an issue. Now it is a huge issue! Used to be a raise was a little more on your paycheck, now it's less after they take it back in taxes, dues, insurance, taxes, insurance. Yeah I know I listed those two twice. We are the strongest most technologically advanced nation in the world. I think everyone would have been on Ws side if he would have just said our livelyhoods depend on oil, we need it and we are going to go get it. We need less government, less taxes, less interference period.
Now I don't doubt that in 5 years deisel prices will avg. $7 a gallon. Because states will be taxing. Localities will be taxing it. Feds will be taxing it. There will be usage taxes. Highway taxes. Environmental taxes. Then of course the oil companies owned and controlled by overseas intrests will have to continue to produce those record profits!
