For GRINDING I prob use the 7-9” 40% of the time. 4.5” grinders the balance.

Almost all cut off discs and wire brushing is done with 4.5”.

And right angle die grinder with 3” discs for tight areas.

I have an old 7" Matabo. It is almost impossible to get brushes for it, and if it ever dies I will probably buy their newest design. A 7" will flat out cut/grind crazy.... Not that the wheels and cutoff discs are cheap, either... but worth every penny.

I have a Metabo 6" and I bought a new hercules HF recently in 4.5 The Hercules is not bad at all. I've burned through 4 of the 4.5" HF cheapies ($9.99 on sale). They're fine but at a point, you get tired of throwing them away to grab another. The metabo is very nice but very expensive.

Above is a photo of my 7/9” Milwaukee. The four heater wire connections overheat over time and melt the plastic housings.

Apparently most manufacturers assemble like this and it isn’t a problem on smaller grinders as they won’t generate as much heat.

For a service tech to disassemble, replace the heaters to a USED unit would probably exceed more than half the cost of buying new.

I don’t know the exact age of my grinder as I purchased it used a few years ago, but it was an “old school” one. I can only assume they’re even worse now.

For replacement I chose Makita over Milwaukee only because it was on sale.

that's a field coil, not a heater.

Sorry for incorrect terminology. It’s the four wires going to the field coil.
