'71 Ford 2000 3 cyl Gas - Not Charging Battery

Observed the problem a few hours ago, where battery begins dragging, then eventually dies. Belt seemed loose, replaced, no change. Charge light doesn't work, but voltage at battery @ 1500 RPM is equal to battery voltage with engine off.

I have seen similar threads and may opt to hire a mechanic if it's not a quick fix. I have a spare regulator, and wonder if there is potential downside to simply installing it and hoping for the best. In other words, could another lurking problem ruin the new regulator? Thanks for any feedback.

If it is a DC dynamo the easy way to test it is to remove the fan belt and then apply 12V to it and it should start to spin as a motor.

I see references to different types of circuits, and polarization. I'm not sure what I have, but wonder if I might need to try polarizing the regulator. I may have done something similar to a 1965 Mustang, but it would have been relatively close to 1965 when I did it. I don't know what I'm doing.

For what it's worth, I'm trying to attach pics of generator and regulator. Both say "Made in England." Regulator shows "RB340." Generator shows approximately "C27565....... 44xT.....40T....12....." Rust obscures some characters. Any advice as to polarization process, and anything else, is much appreciated
