7100 front steering question

I had my 1994 7100's front tires off the ground, and noticed when I turned the wheel left or right, the front wheels/tires moved forward and backward...it looked really weird. There was at least an inch and a half play forward, same backward (maybe total around 2 inches or so)

This seems odd. Can anyone help?

Is there actually something loose; i.e., "play" in something, or is it simply the pivot point location that causes that? It's easy to check with the front wheels off the ground, by seeing if you can move a wheel forward and backward or up and down without turning the steering wheel. My first guess (purely a guess since I haven't seen it) is that it's normal.

Yes that does seem odd.
I'd check all bolts,nuts,pin for tight...had 95 B7100 w/925hrs never did that.

I'm assuming that with the front wheels on the ground there is no free play on the steering wheel.


Check the center pivot pin and attachment area for the front axle.

I go with Egon, you need to adjust the centre pivot which attaches the axle to the underneath of the chassis. If you look there is a nut on the back end(or front end) of the pivot pin ( I can't remember which side) which when tightened up takes the slack out of the axle and stops it moving forwards or backwards. Depending on how much the pin or bushes are worn you might need to replace them, but it isn't a dificult task.

You guys were right - once I lifted the tractor with the bumper, the loose-ness was obvious and I just tightened the castle nut. Problem solved. Thanks guys.
