Since turf tires don't do too well on ice, I'm contemplating trying chains -- maybe just on front. Anybody had any experience in this area? I've seen a picture of chains on the rear, where I didn't think there'd be enough clearance between the tires and fenders.

Not the expert mind you but I've heard a lot of different remarks (pro and con) on front chains with a 4X4.
I know on my 4X4 quad ATV , it's strongly not recommended to use chains on the front.
I was told it can damage the front end . ( bind it up)
I've got chains on the rear of my 7264 with no "extra" room at all. It's got the industrial type tires.

Chains will not work on the rear of the 7275 with turf tires. You need to add a 1" spacer between the wheel and hub assembly. I'm waiting for an answer on my spacers now to be made. I have bought the 2 link ladder chains for my turf tires. The chains hit the fender brackets. Trust me, they don't clear. You really should run the chains on the rear. The front driveline is not as strong as the rear drive.

I've got a '96 7274 with turf tires (Good Year Sof-Tracs) and have had tire chains on the rear for 2 winters. They work great and don't really contact the fender braces (an occasional link must slap though, as I see minor scratches on the braces, but no real damage). I had thought about front chains, but don't really need them with the backs installed.

I put the double ladder bar chains on mine and they hit the rear brackets real bad. Now with my new DIY spacers they miss the brackets completely. Now I can go anywhere with this setup. This picture was taken before the tensioners had a chance to tighten up on the chains.

What are the DIY spacers? Are they between the wheel and hub? How much width do they add to the tires? Thanks in advance.
