Power must be able to flow fromt he key switch start position, thru the NS switch, then to the solenoid. get you a gator clip and wire and clip one end to the ignition switch start lug, and the other to the solenoid power in line.. make sure you are in neutral on both sticks, and make sure you are hitting the start lug.. be inthe operator seat when you do this in case you goof up.. now you have bypassed the NS switch.. if you hit the key-start position and she fires you know the problem is in the wire fromthe key switch to the NS switch, the NS switch itself, or fromt he wire from the NS switch tot he solenoid... easy to jumper each out in turn to figure what's the culpret.

Thanks for jumping in here SoundGuy. I seem to be operating on the 'teach a man to fish' theory here and am not really sure how that will turn out via messages :D
Dave.

Next step is for the OP to get back so we can get some feedback.

I am having a similar problem. I just put a new master wire harness in my 71 gas 3000. I am currently not getting power to the key switch. I used a voltmeter on the key switch and it was dead. I also used a ohm meter to insure that the switch works, which it does. Where does the power to the key switch come from? If I have removed the wire from the coil to the solenoid, would that eliminate power to the switch? I have power from the battery to the solenoid, solenoid to the regulator lead, but nothing to the key switch.

I also screwed up the wiring from the coil to the solenoid. On my solenoid there are four posts. two are labeled, one label "s" one labeled "I". I have three wires coming down from the harness, one goes to the positive post of the solenoid, one is the safety switch(spade connection) to the side labeled "s" and a female bullet connector. Does this lead go to the post labeled "I" or into hte resistor wire, or on the "s" post along side the spade connection? Sorry for the basic questions. I am learning as I go. First time tractor project. Thanks.

the solenoid bypass post goes thru a plain wire to the '6v' coil. the igniton wire from the switch should go thru the resistor wire to the coil.

grab yer service manual and flip it to the wire diagram so you can trace your wires between the reg and key switch. I don't have any of my manuals with me here at work or I'd look for you. I have less hands on exp witht he 3 cyl models.. and the one I do have is a diesel :)

Thanks Soundguy. Unfortunately that is how I have run the solenoid wires. The only thing that is different is that i replaced the resistor wire with a ballast resistor. I have the wiring diagram, but the wire harness was an aftermarket harness from sparex, and the wire colors weren't an exact match. They said that the gas and diesel harness are the same. Should the brown lead from the solenoid/positive battery post feed power to the regulator "key switch to Batt" or to the regulator to solenoid? I would assume power should be coming to Key switch to batt, but not sure. They are both brown in the harness and on the diagram. Thanks again.

I am also placing a jumper between the saftey switch wires. I am assuming that will complete the circuit so I can start the engine.

Is the safety switch bad?

i'd replace it if I were you.

In any case.. yes.. it's a series switch.. power in, power out.. if the tractor range is in gear.. no power out to the solenoid.
the reg tab should have a feed line out to the key switch.

Thanks. I will go out later today and see what I can peice together. outcome posted later!

I am getting a live 12v to the generator, but nothing to the key switch. Is that normal? I think I am going to send this sparex harness back and get an OEM version, unless it sounds like a simple cross at the voltage regulator that I am missing. Every thing seems to match up there. so confused.

should not be getting power TO the genny. TO the vreg... yes. and TO the key.. yes.

I think I'd make my own and be done with it... just not too many wires to hassle with.. oil, genny stuff, and ignition stuff, plus the headlamps. a spool of 14awg and a roll of black tape and some ends ought to do it.
