has it overheated, had a similar issue on one we picked up used, got hot and cracked the head, hard to see but was defiantly cracked between the valves

rebuilt head and works fine

Haha, reading through this old thread, will starting fluid break the rings no mater what or it's just a high possibility?

Hi possibility.. used incorrectly..
starting fluid CAN BE used on a cranking diesel engine w/ no adverse effects when done properly.. in very short bursts & usually not sprayed directly in the intake.. just a short "wasp/wisp" by the intake..
MOST people spray it IN the intake like they're killing a wasp..
