Is it possible the injection lines are gummed up or something? Good flow at each bleed screw on the IP but nothing at the injectors. Very frustrating.

Sounds as if metering valve in IP is stuck. "Lightly tap" side of IP with a small hammer. Have put any fuel conditioner in fuel system?

If it was my tractor I'd try tow starting it. Several yrs back I owned a Ford 3000 with a none operating fuel gauge. The older gentleman that operated it for me pulling a hay rake would drive by my fuel storage tank with only a small amount of fuel in tractor tank to hay field. After tractor died & fuel tank was filled I would bled fuel system until I got flustered. Then I'd tow the tractor & it would start running in less than 10 ft.

Tapped side of IP and no change. I have not added conditioner, only new fuel.

I've never push/tow started a vehicle, but have wanted to try it. The loader is still on the tractor though so a question...with the bucket removed, will the lift arms be able to reach the ground? I've never looked at that with it off, and while I think they would not its far better for me to ask now instead of finding out the hard way and having them drag. If they would drag, I'm better off placing a dolly under the bucket. I really don't want to remove the whole loader if possible.

Do you have a way to jack up the loader? If so, put the lift/boom valve in float, jack up the loader and put the valve back to center. The loader should stay up.

I don't have hydraulic pressure as I changed the fluid recently. I thought turning the engine over would build enough to keep the loader up, but it wouldn't. I fixed it by propping it up with a piece of wood.

Made several attempts to pull start and none worked. Tried different gear settings and none got it done. Any tips? Or is there enough reason at this point to think the fuel shut off is stuck and need to fix the IP?

When attempting to tow tractor with a FEL resting on ground simply route tow strap/chain from towing vehicle under FEL tube connecting both boom frames then connect strap to tractor frt axle. Putting tension on strap should raise boom but if that doesn't raise boom enough then another option is raise boom with a jack & block with a piece of angle iron the correct length placed on one boom cylinder shaft held in place with a zip tie or 2. Place 2040 in 8th gear & be sure fuel stop on IP is in correct position then begin towing.

OK, we gave it another shot in 8th gear (which I do believe we skipped the last time around stopping at 7th.) I got it to the point where we were rolling with the clutch out and I could see the fan turning but the engine was definitely not running as I tried the throttle and got no response. I do still have 2 of the injection lines loosened, but if memory serves me well, the tractor can run like that then the lines are tightened back up. There wasn't any fuel leakage at the top of the lines anyway so I really think there's an issue with the metering valve. I'm out of ideas otherwise.

If it was my tractor I'd remove fuel filter then fill filter with auto trans fluid or fuel conditioner, reinstall filter then bleed air out. Then be sure fuel shut lever on pump is in "on position" & tow tractor for at least 10 minutes in 8th gear with traction clutch engaged. Back in the 80's when I drove a 18 wheeler it was common practice when changing Cummins fuel filters to fill new filter with auto trans fluid then install filter. Then turn key & engine would immediately start/run. Utilizing trans fluid when changing filters was easier & not as stinky as filling filters with diesel plus added some lubrication to IP. Back in the 80's diesel had a more pungent odor than it does at today's lower sulfur content. I also remember leaving truck engine running ALL night in the Iowa sub freezing temp's while I was up there to pickup new JD tractors or equipment.

You could utilize one of the "next lower" gears to 8th but for some reason I always choose high gear for towed start vehicle.. I've never had success attempting to tow start with towed vehicle in a gear close to low speed.
