Very nice article, too bad Detroit Diesel did not state what "brand" of oil they were using.......

That MBE 900 engine is actually a German made Mercedes Benz turbodiesel that DD sells.....

That's great, but is this anything unusual for heavy truck engines? I think cold starts and internal condensation are major killers for car/personal vehicle engines.

Not to mention that the MB diesel car engines from the 1980's have a reputation of outlasting the rest of the vehicle - and going towards 1M miles if the vehicle itself is kept up and used.

This is only a medium truck engine @ 7.2 liters, but you are right, condensation and the habits of personal vehicle drivers are major killers. However, adulterated diesel fuel is also a major killer and this truck was equipped with EGR and a dual turbine wastegated turbocharger, even with the extra heat and soot levels from the EGR, the turbine bearings still were in perfect condition and they hit over 210,000rpms routinely, indicating the use of high quality oil and oil filters as well as air filters.

That kind of mileage is not that uncommon for a over the road truck. Class 8 truck engines that are well maintained can easily get over 1.5 million miles between inframe overhauls. I think CAT has a couple that have gone over 3 million miles before the first overhaul. CAT even has a million mile club for CAT engine owners that have gone over 1 million miles on their engines.

Look at the expected engine overhaul time intervals for the majority of Class 8 truck engine manufacturers in the following link on page 2. All are between 850,000 and 1,000,000 miles.

780,000 miles has got to be at least 10,000 hours of operation if not 15,000 hours.

They recommend CJ-4 oil for 2007 with the low ash for the diesel particulate filter. And oil and filter changes as follows:

Severe Duty - 6,000 miles

Short Haul - 15,000 miles

Long Haul - 20,000 miles

We change the CJ-4 motor oil in our Mercedes Blue-Tech turbodiesel every 10,000 miles, it has the new diesel particulate filter.

That looks like an uncharacteristically small air intake...with a throttle plate in it, no less. For regeneration, they say. It would work well as an anti-runaway engine device too, if the operator had any control over it.

That is how the Diesel Particulate Filter on our Mercedes is regenerated.

There is a backpressure monitor closed loop feedback to the ECU. When the backpressure gets to a certain point, it simply injects more fuel (primarily into the late injection crank window to extend the burn using the multiple injection event electronic piezo injectors) which raises the EGT enough to burn all the soot particles out of the DPF.

It first came on around 3,000 miles brand new and sounded like some kind of afterburner effect for about 4-5 minutes, a noticeable "roaring" sound kinda like a cresote fire in a woodstove chimney. Probably reduces fuel mileage a little bit when it occurs.

As long as you use only ULSD, it doesn't even need to be checked until 90,000 miles and should be good for over 250,000 miles, but if you use High Sulfur Diesel Fuel or a non CJ-4 motor oil, you will be footing the bill for a new $3,000 exhaust filter......

the reason they have to brag up the MBE900 is because it is primarily intneded to replace the series 50, which had many EGR related issues.

My employer woulda been one of the first groups to buy they MBE' 900s in our vehcilces, if we woulda stayed with Detroit, but we went the Cummins route this time.

Alas, they teased me by saying if I clicked here and if I clicked there I could get a price. But no, you have to call to get a price. Could not find an EPA MPG rating either.

I'm guessing its a 75-100K truck.

When I bought my F350 the sales guy was working another sale for a F650 that a gentleman goat herder lawyer was buying. Crew Cab with Lariat package including DVDs in the back for the kids. The guy was going to raise goats, take them up to Philly in the F650 to sell since there was a bigger market up there. Then buy hay for the goat on the return trip.

Kinda hard to believe he could sell that many goats to pay for the F650.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

One thing about this truck though....

If you buy one, it will easily go over 1,000,000 miles, so it would prolly be the last time you ever needed to purchase another truck.

In addition, if you worked it into your estate, it could be passed on to the grandkids for another 1,000,000 miles or so too....

Nothing new there, just Freightliners verssion of the International one that has been out for a few years. There are also no EPA fuel economy standards, it's not a light duty vehicle, it's a medium duty commercial truck.

You know what made a good looking medium duty P/U truck, a early 90's 4900 series International. I have a friend that turned one into a P/U to tow his 5th wheel Pulling Tractor tri-axle trailer. He even went as far as to have a custom raised letter International tail gate made. Great looking truck. A simple to the point truck that can geter done and look good doing it.
