I have a 782 that has been great over the years but now I'm having problems... First is that I don't have a service manual for it... Let me add also that Iam a mechanic with about 30 years experience working on boats... Now for my problems, the engine idles well but starves out when you rev it up unless you pull the choke out... The fuel pump is new and the carb has been boiled out with a new needle and seat gaskets and high speed needle, the tank is clean and fresh gas in it... I did a compression test and it showed 95 and 100 lbs for each cylinder... The second problem is that the pto clutch now won't engage, when the switch is turned on nothing happens but if you raise up off of the seat the safety switch will still shut down the engine... Hopefully someone can help me out here or point me to the information I need to get this thing up and running... Thanks in advance...

There is obviously something wrong within the carb, I've seen KT17's still run fine with compression as low as 80-85 PSI. If it's getting fuel from the pump, I would first check the float needle and seat. If OK, then check and see if it will run at throttle by turning the high speed screw way open. If that gets it, the replaced high speed jet or needle are no good- that long needle is VERY touchy and if turned in too far it is killed. The KT17 is also somewhat touchy with the settings on both the idle mixture and the high speed needle- they both need to be just so for it to run steady at speed. Also, check the gap on your ignition points- sometimes they give problems at throttle up.

There is a two prong wire connector at the PTO clutch. Disconnect it, and see if power is at the plug with the ignition turned on (engine off) and PTO switch on. If not, the dash switch could be bad or the fuse in the dash could be blown (latter case will give you no head/tail lights too.) If power is at that connector, the electromagnet for the clutch itself is no longer good.

If the clutch seems to be getting power but doesn't pull in, you could try adjusting it. The 782 clutch is magnetic. If the gap is too wide, it won't pull in.
