I am coming up on my 50 hour service and out of curiosity I called the JD dealer to see what he would charge and he told me around $70.00. I was confused as the JD manual says to change engine oil and filter as well as hydro oil and filter (among other things). When I questioned him on what I would get for that price he said all they recommend doing at 50 hours is oil and filter change, lubrication and check torque on bolts.

My initial thought was to do as the manual says and change oil and hydro fluid and filters, am I being overly maintenance minded?

Any help or opinions from other owner, 790 or not, would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi...

I say follow the manual...

There's likely reminants of metal/oils/whatever etc. from the manufacturing process in the fluids & filters...

Maybe the fluids in the tractor are only designed for breakin... ?? ...I dunno...

I sent my 990 in for the 50 hour service at about 53 hours. It came back with a spare filter (I can't recall whether it was fuel or hydro). Hand-written on the box was a note from the service guy saying hold onto this until 500 hours.

But overall, I'd say more maintenence is better than too little, and it's best to ask yourself what will cost more: the service, the possible repair, the time you saved or spent more valuably by having someone else do it, or the peace of mind that you have some recourse if something goes wrong.

The manual for my 790 (bought in 2002) does not say to drain and replace the hydro fluid after 50 hours. Just says oil/filter, check torque and a few other minor checks.

When I did my 50 hr on the 790, the oil and filter was a snap. The other juice was not. Without a mid pto the drain point on the hydraulic is different than the manual and I had to take loose a brake arm to get to the bolt. The filter was so tight I ended up driving a screwdriver through to get it off. After all that the fluid was prisitine. It seems to me I read somewhere that the hyd oil need not be changed at the first 50( I might be dreaming).Be sure to think about what you will do with 4 gallons of spent oil.

"It seems to me I read somewhere that the hyd oil need not be changed at the first 50( I might be dreaming)."

The manuals online conflict.
Manual LV0790G - - 592445 does not say to change the transmission fluid (at 50 hours), however LV0790G - - 592446 does specify the transmission oil change at 50 hours.

My hardcopy manual follows LV0790G - - 592445. However, I think I'll change it at 100 hours initially. Since that would be pretty close to 18 months service (considering the number of hours I average annually), reckon that's reasonable. Waiting for a 500 hour service might take years.

Although I am of the opinion it's important to leave the break-in oil in service for the reccomended duration, after that i change it annually, regardless of the hours.

I'd go with what your hardcopy manual reads... Any warranty issues would be covered by the manual's requirements.

FYI, the 990 manual does not require a transmission oil change at 50 hours, but the two 4xxx series manuals I looked at (4310 and 4710) do require the change.

Any of you folks ever change the transmission oil (stick or automatic) in your cars or trucks? I never have...

Thanks gentlemen, I appreciate the input, Roy you can see with the two manuals conflicting I really wasn't sure which way to go. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think I will change both oil and hydro just to be on the safe side.

Thanks

I began to inquire about this problem a few weeks ago. When I read the 4310 post saying to change hydro fluid at 50 hours I checked my manual for the 4300 purchased 2002. It states to change at 200 hours. I sent an e-mail to JD and they said follow the manual instructions. They did not answer my questions about whether this was a change in recommendations for CUT's or not. Does anyone have any idea why the hydro fluid change recommendations may be different for these comparable machines?

Change all of your fluids at 50 and then again at 200. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I believe I will go with the 200 hour hydo fluid change in my 4300 per the manual.
