790 Deals?

The $15900 seems OK, especially with the shredder as part of the deal. Prices (and discounts) seem to be quite dependent on region. Where abouts are you located?

Since you're going for the loader, prehaps you could get the dealer to toss a ballast box in the deal (retail is about $190). That weight on the 3PH helps a lot when you're doing loader work. The filled tires won't be enough to prevent spinning of the tires.

BTW, one doesn't do too much shifting with a tractor. Once you select a gear and a range..that's pretty much it. Loader work is mostly a forward gear (for me, 2nd or 3rd, low range) and reverse.

I know the HST fans are lovin' their trannys, but gear works fine for a resindential owner.

I spoke with my dealer yesterday, we are in Northeast PA. He told me there is a $500.00 rebate on the tractor and an additional $250.00 if you purchase two implements with it.

I'm looking at:
790 FWD
FEL 300X
LX5 Cutter
Price is around $15,000.00

From one of the earlier postings I'm going to add the I-Match (thanks).

Yeah I need to find out more about the loader. I have 300X on my quote but it retails at $3,190.00 and then there is an additional $695.00 for the Heavy duty bucket. BUT dosent the 300X loader include a "light duty" bucket so shouldnt I get a credit back if I dont get the "light duty"bucket? I know at deere.com under the build it option it credits you back but it only shows the 300 loader not the 300X as an option for the 790. This is so difficult....... I just dont wanna get pumped in the butt by the salesman.

I bet by 300 loader they mean 300X or 300CX.

If you ditch the lightweight bucket for the heavy bucket, you will get a credit for the lightweight. I wish I had gotten the heavy bucket for my 4720, but you might not want the extra weight on your 790.

Roy,
Which bucket do you have on your 790?

The cost difference between the two buckets is less than $200 at time of purchase, but you will never say "this bucket is built too strong" if you get the HD one up front. The materials bucket is for mulch, hay and other lightweight items. It does have a bigger cubic ft capacity. The HD bucket is what you need for moving rocks, sand, dirt, gravel or if you add the tooth bar. Check the previous posts over the last couple years and you will see lots of people strenghtening their buckets. No one has tried to make theirs slimmer or lighter. The website shows a 300 loader, my JD loan papers show a 300 loader but there is an 300X in the serial number??? Other JD website locations do show a 300 vs 300X vs 300CX. Lots of confusion. The CX is self leveling, which would have been a cool feature if available on the 790, especially since I bought pallet forks.

Just want to clear up an error and give my opinion The 300cx is not self leveling. The 400cx is (for the 4000 twenty series). The 300cx is not. I have one and sure wish it was self leveling! I don't have any knowledge of the 300 loader. The 300x (compared to the 300cx) has slightly lower lift capacity (200lbs) and lift height (about 1 foot) but has better reach and faster cycle times. This is all from a loader brochure I have from Deere.

Also, I would not agree that you have to have the HD bucket. I had a 420 loader for almost 7 years with the std materials bucket and had NO issues with it. When I sold it, it was a straight as the day I bought it new. It had NO paint left on it though because I used it a lot. I moved many, many tons of stone, class 1 and class 2 rip-rap and large boulders. I pushed trees over with it and had a tooth bar that I used to strip top soil off of a few building sites (for sheds). Deere's toothbar is stated to be for the HD bucket only now. So, depending on your use, that may be a better option for you. I will certainly not fault someone for wanting the HD bucket, but in my case, I certainly did not need or want it.

My father loves his gear tractors also. He does not finish mow with his compact and really does not need or want a hydro. His New Holland has the synchronized shuttle transmission. Slick... He mainly uses it for field work.

I finish mow a LOT with mine and the hydro is just the best for that. I also like the hydro for loader work. I've just gotten used to it can operate it very effeciently. But, a hydro transmission eats power like a fat man at a buffet. My 3720 has about 44 HP gross engine and 35 PTO. But, I bet it has about 15 HP at the drawbar. I wish Nebraska would test the drawbar HP on these small hydro tractors just for fun. My point is, if you don't need or want hydro, the gear trans is a better choice I think.

That is all I have to offer. Not much, I know....

Thanks for all the input guys, tommorow is Monday so its time to go back to wheelin and dealin with the salesman.....Im gonna add the Toothbar to the HD bucket. They fill the tires with water but should I see if they'll do it foam. Also.... do a few sandbags or a custom fab lead weight perform the same as the "Ballast Box" if I dont mind the shredder hanging off the back?

Ah - thanks for setting me straight on the 300X vs. 300CX. I assumed it was the same as the 400 line of loaders.

Hey D,

I sure wish it were self-leveling. Actually, I was hoping after I read this, that maybe Deere had revised the 300cx. But I couldn't find anything about it.
But, we can keep dreaming, right??

Went to 2 dealers this week and both had quotes at about $14,000 for 790 w/300 FEL. Asked about 300x and both said it is not available on 790. 300 only. One dealer had a used 2003 w/ 17 hours for $11,500. Said could probably do it with LX5 for just over $12,000, Just to move it off his lot. That to me really sounds to be a good deal, but not exactly sure it's what I want. The price sure sounds good though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
