Basically it boils down to this John Deere engineering changed the motor and told NO ONE. The dealer didn't know and JD Customer service doesn't know. To top it all off they have NO publications which list the motor (3TNE82 A-JK) correctly. They have 2 sets of figures on the web but they all state the motor is a #TNE84, although now the at least have the HP and size right on the web. As far as technical bulletins, service manuals, etc JD customer service DOESN"T even know the motor exists. The only way you can find out about this motor is to buy the tractor and then unwrap your owners manual or pop the hood. The customer service rep. did a computer search and could not find any mention of the 3TNE82 in regards to the 790.
There is a HUGE void between JD engineering, customer service, JD dealerships, their web designed, their print ad guys, and their service guys! Deere looked like an idiot and it really wasn't his fault. We have dealers on here and they didn't even know. I was a salesman before and that is really being left out to dry so I didn my griping at JD customer service instead.
Basically I informed JD customer service and the dealership about what motor is in what tractor..nice. I never even drove a tractor until Saturday, yet I am now more informed about the 790 than anyone at John Deere at least those within reach of a phone /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I really like the tractor and I worked it HARD because it was going back Saturday if I wasn't 100% happy. I was going to go slow while I learned the machine but felt I had to try it NOW just in case. This isn't really a problem with the tractor I am satisifed and it works great but the change could just has easily been a real problem. That is what's scary.
If I order a Chevy with a 5.7 300 hp motor I don't expect to open the hood and find a 5.0 270 hp motor. I will wait until tomorrow for a call from someone of rank at JD and then I will call and speak to management. I was going to wait and see if the at least wrote a letter but I would think this is something a company should at least give the customer a call and an apology on.
The saving grace is that it's a great tractor and I am done with dwelling about the change. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Not going to let this ruin an otherwise thoruoghly enjoyable machine.
