790--Engine Size

It's about 3000 dollars. I would get the 990 if I had wanted to spend more moey.

If I had known about the HP change it wouldn't have changed my decision... I don't think. It is the fact of NOT having been given the facts or a choice that irks me!

The other tracors I was considering are still more $$ for similar HP.

Love the tractor and have gotten tons done and now have 13 hous on the meter in only 3 days. No idling all working hard /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Since this is now the same powerplant as used in the 4210... what is the street price of a 4210 vs. 790?

About $ 1,900 more for the 4210.....if you get the gear tranny.

"specifications subject to change..."

I am sure you will find disclaimers, but this seems a pretty major change, and hard to see where the improvement would be to you.

The 790 can be had if you shop well for about 11,000 and change for the tractor with R-4s and no mid PTO but DSCV, I think the 4210 is going to run you more than 13,000????? I might be wrong but I think it's going to run you more than 1900 extra.

Hi yaw,
I found this interesting because I've been looking at some grey market jap tractors and they all have their HP ratings inflated. Why, don't know.

But one thing that looked interesting:
Tractor.............Yanmar F320.....JD 790
engine..............3TNE84............3TNE84
displacement.....1496cc.............1300cc
power...............32 PS...............27 HP
horsepower........31.5 HP............27 HP

I'd say don't read too much into the engine model.....looks like it comes in different displacements and HP ratings. To me it sounds more like JD engineering and Yanmar engineering aren't communicating well. Or else the conversion from Pferdestarke (PS) to Horsepower (HP) is just too confusing.

I hope you 790 owners like the tractor......it's no. 1 on my shopping list. Now if I can just let the money out of my hands LOL.

Mazda did buy backs of Miatas and the new RX-8's for overstating the horsepower in these cars. Would John Deere do the same?

Comments on engine: I have the older 30 HP; the only time I've had an issue with HP is with a two bottom plow in relatively dry pasture... so my feeling is that you probably are just fine.

The engine is different in the 790 not because of Deere, but because of EPA standards that were introduced....Emission standards tend to take a bite out of HP.....newer 790's with the TNV engine are as follows: 27 HP 24 PTO HP

Great information. I thought they downsized to deemphasize the value of the 790 to more aggressively market the 4XXX series...

Over a year later, adding to this post. This engine change is pretty well known. I just picked up a 2000 yr model 790 with the 91cid 30hp engine. I haven't even taken delivery on it yet, the dealer is adding some things to it, and giving it a thorough going over for me. But I've "visited it" a couple of times and run it a bit, and I already love it. It shows a bit of wear and tear, nothing too bad, but I'll be retouching it to look as near new as I can make it. Getting a brand new 419 loader, and a 65" Frontier boxblade, and forks. I am also looking at adding top and tilt to it, probably with the kit from CCM.
