Kubota L2800
Well, I'm narrowing down my list, and went to look at the 790. I really liked the tractor, but was disapointed with the quote. According to the website, list price is $11,879 with 4wd, dual SCV, R4's, and without mid PTO. The dealer's quote was $11,859 plus tax. Do JD's really sell for full list, or should I visit another dealer? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

For comparison, another tractor on my short list is the Kubota L2800. It lists for $13204 with R4's, and my best quote is $11,150 plus tax -- just over 15% off list.

In an ideal world, I could just shrug off the $750 difference (including tax), but in reality, I can put that money to good use elsewhere.

You should visit another dealer. Or even just call a few more if the drive is fairly long.

The discount will vary quite a bit, but I would expect 8-15% or so. It also depends on the options you're getting put on by the dealer etc. Some options require a lot of dealer prep and others do not. Also depends on the availability of that model, if they have one or a re ordering it, and which salesman you get.

Try to get your quote on the whole package.

Skyhawk,

Did you ask for a discounted price? The dealer may have just given you the list price depending on how you asked the question. I have had that happen to me before but a follow up question about dicounts quicky got a reply of what they would do. Sometimes they won't give you their best price unless they know your are ready to make a deal. I don't mean pressure to buy it right then, just an understanding that you are doing more than just kicking the tires.

Thanks for the quick replies! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm an admittedly "bad" negotiator. I usually just shop around and go with whoever gives the best price up front -- I really dislike haggling (salesmen must love guys like me).

I told the salesman that the Kubota L2800 was currently at the top of my list, but I wanted to look at the 790 before making any final decisions. I also told him Kubota's 0% financing ends on the 12th, so I need to decide this weekend.

When he told me his price, I told him that he was about $700 higher than the L2800, and Kubota's 0% financing was for 36 months, while JD's was 24 months. He didn't offer a discount, and I didn't ask!

I think I'll call him on Tuesday morning, and ask if that's the best he can do. If it is, I'll take a drive over to the "other" JD dealer on Tuesday after work (it's not too far, but it's usually a hectic drive).

By the way, I'm buying "just" the tractor because I'm replacing a Ford 2N, and already have all of the implements that I need.

Thanks again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ,

Skyhawk,

To be a "good" negotiator you just need to know what you want and what to expect. Going in as an informed consumer makes you more confident. This forum can help you. There have been lots of threads on buying. Search them and you will find many tips as well as discount expectations.

You should expect at least a 10% discount off of list. Some have gotten upwards of 20% but this is dependent on location and how much stuff is being purchased at one time.

I would check out the other dealer before asking the first dealer if that is the best he can do. See what your local market is. Also, instead of asking the dealer if that is the best he can do, make him an offer based on some percentage off list.

Good luck.

Jeff
