Price Check 790 price check

Well I finally made it to a Deere dealer last weekto pick up a part for my 850. While I was there I asked about prices for new machines. I told him I wanted a tractor in the 30ish HP range). First thing he quoted was the new 20 seires (40+HP and then after I told him for the 3rd time that 30 HP was about all the budget I had he quoted the 10 series, still higher $$ than I am looking to spend but in the right area. I had to git down the road so I left. I hadent looked in the lot at what he had sitting there, so I wandered over real quick. He had a 790 and a 990 sitting right there, never even mentioned that seiries, and at that time I didnt know to ask. I looked over the 90's and thought "heck, these are what I have run and own and what I want" the 90's are a bare bones work tractor. I didnt know the hp of either so I figured they were out of my range, till I hit the JD site and found that the 790 is 27 HP with a base price in my range!!! I got a bit ticked at that point at the dealer. There is another JD dealer farther away so I went for a ride. Thay didnt have any in stock but they gave me a price of 15830 out the door with 419 loader and heavy bucket, ind. tires and 6% PA sales tax. Priced a hoe seperatly 6650 (ouch) I told them I wanted the tires loaded with WW fluid so i am assuming the price included that.

#1. I can see where some folks get ticked at some Deere dealers. in their defense the AGCO guy was no prize either.

#2. how is the price in comparsion to Deere 790's that you guys have run into.

#3. Any chance a JD8 hoe off a JD 950 would fit a 790?? They are basicly the same tractor and I could put my hands on a hoe, at least on a part time basis, which is all I would really need one for.

BTW when I was a boy, we had a weekend place in Chicora... Almost forgot that name...

You probably already saw that the 790 is set for the 7 hoe, and the 990 can use the 8B (maybe an 8?) That might make a 990 worth a look....

Why not contact both dealers with a specific price request, say a 790 with loader and a 990 with loader and setup for the 8 backhoe. Try and get the ecaxt model and serial number on the hoe, so there's no oops there.

I know the 990 will bump your budget, but having access to a backhoe might make it worthwile....

Don't be too hard on that first saleman, he was trying to get you into MORE tractor, and you already are wanting to step up. Usually its only worth it to do that if you move up a bunch (and I am not all that sure that a 790 is much if any over an 850...)

But it sure is easy spendin' other folks money!!

The 850 is 22 hp 2wd, turfs no fel. If it had 4wd and a fel, it would do the job. When I was clearing for my house I needed a machine RIGHT NOW and this little feller came available in my avalible cash range so I scooped it up and put him to work. That little guy a 75$ carryall, 6 ft backblade, and drawbar did a lot of work. Now that the family is moved in and all (most /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif they never go away) of the new house bills are paid I can get a machine to do some more of the work that I need to do and keep up the place. If I had had more cash at the time, I would have gotten the larger machine then.

The 790 is 27hp 4wd with tires that will do the job. A better comparison is the 790 and the 950. Besides a little different style, they appear to be the same tractor. My father still owns his 950 and I have a few hours on it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif so I know what the 27 hp can do in that package. His hoe is what I wanted to steal, errrr borrow when I needed one /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I dont think the problem is in size, but in style. The 50 seires vs the 90 series. I'll have to do a stare and compare on it. However the dealer #2 said it wouldnt bolt up.

Yes dealer #1 tried to put me on to a $ bigger $ tractor, however, after I explained what I was looking to do with it, he didnt even mention the option of the -$ smaller -$ less gizmoed out tractor. He did mention the smaller hp machines, just not the ones without all of the buttons and do-dads. Thats what kind of tourqed me off, he only was interested in talking about the high $ fancy tractors, there was a 990 sitting there and it wasn't mentioned either @ 40hp. The only "more" he was interested in was $$$$$. I was talking Ford with vinal seats and he was selling Lincon with leather. The dealership will get another chance, just not that salesman.

I have a woodlot, not a crop farm, and its only 52 ac. I need to move some dirt, I need to skid some logs, I need to plow some snow, And I need to be able to haul a carryall loaded with firewood or the dog. Soon I'll need a RFM for a small yard and a small brush hog, probably 4 ft max. A smaller machine will sneak through the trees a lot better than a bigger one. A bigger hog would be a detriment where I need to use it, in the woods. Although a 5 ft hog will work behing a 27 hp machine without a problem, I dont have the open area to use it.

A 30ish hp machine will cover all of the jobs I need to get done, I know, because I have done most of them with the 850 @22hp, and all of them and a bunch of others, with a 950 at 27hp.

I am an uninformed buyer in the fact that I dont know the model #'s to hp to style to price. I am not an uninformed buyer in the use of a tractor or implements. Sure a 990 would be nice, a bit of overkill, but I still havent ruled it out. Overkill can be a good thing as long as it's more POWER /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
