Re: 790 Exhaust stinks

It may be that you are getting some kind of finish burning off the exhaust system which will change as you run the tractor. The flaw in that theory is that my exhaust system doesn't get very hot

Why not go with the flow....? A recent article says that diesel fuel cut about 20% with used cooking oil (ala MacDonald's) works just fine combustion wise. And the hidden advantage is the exhaust then smells like french fries. Or you could get some from Dunkin Donuts and enjoy the smell of fresh baked donuts. Designer fumes, I'd call it.
Wonder if coffee would work ....?
Good luck, David

I've got a 790 with the short stack option you get from John Deere and it sticks out about 2 to 3 inches ask your dealer it just bolts on and I can't remember the price but it wasn't much and you don't have to worry about low hanging limbs.

I think you miss the point, moving the exhaust outlet around will help no doubt but the real problem is that the green one has a "dirty" running engine. Yep, the "ugly little orange one" has a cleaner running engine that produces less fumes and unburnt "smelly" emissions. Good luck, you might install a scuba tank and breath off that while you tractor, /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif . I get no smell---none-- from either the orange BX or the orange 2410--nada--zip. J

I did not like my slash exhaust on my 790. This is the reason the fumes hit your face. I made a real tractor out of her. I used a tail pipe cutter to cut the pipe just below the slash and installed a exhaust rain cap from NAPA.

Same here no smell and only slight start-up smoke, that it, now the guy who owns the landscaping business down the road, he has Kubotas and they smoke like a WW II Battles ship laying down smoke screen while they were running from subs and battleships! Joke Joke, neither are smokers!

JohnnyDeere, I recently bought a Kioti LK3054. I don't know if it is as large as your 790 or smaller but it has an exhaust pipe sitting right in front of the operator. The service manager who was giving me an operational briefing said that many of the owners had the pipe's direction changed by having it bent down or away from the operator's location. He gave the impression that this could be done without harming the engine. Maybe the same holds true for your 790.

I have to commend Trescrows for being honest. It's not often you hear the owner of a pumpkin colored contraption admit to it's ugliness....

My hat off to you Mr Trescrows...

As for smell, I'll admit there is some when I first start the JD 790 but soon as the engine reaches operating temperature I can't say I detect any smoke or smell...

May I suggest Pam, you start the engine an let the 790 run till it warms up, in the mean time you go do something away from the tractor while you wait... GOOD LUCK...

Gunfighter, thanks for the help. I just happened to check out tractor-by-net to find my thread still alive, what a suprise! While I appreciate all the advice, I am perhaps to be admonished by the John Deere folks as I no longer own a 790. I now have a cute little orange one. It was just to much to sit there and choke down the exhaust while my neighbor, (the one with the ugly orange tractor which of course is now quite beautiful) did not. I absoultely love my new Kubota, its a long ways from the 790. I purchased a used L3010 with 3 remotes. It also has a hydrostatic drive that is absolutely terrific. While I really liked my little green one, this orange has made me fall in love. Thanks again for all the great advice, Pam
