I'm going to look at a used 790 (100 hrs) this afternoon and need to know what you think of the 790, pros and cons. How does it compare with the orange and blue ones?It has a factory FEL and I plan to use it for general property work and some snow removal. Thanks

From what I have heard from people who've used them, they are nice, but are a little cramped. They are JD's economy tractor, so they are less expensive than a comparable 4000 series. You should also be aware that though it is in the 35 HP range, it's hydraulics are a little weak for the size. I guess it depends on what you want to use it for. I don't believe Deere has a hoe for it. I think it is a nice little estate tractor though.

Purchase my 790 late November 2001, have little over 56 hours an no problems... The 790 can handle a 6 ft snow blade, 5 ft bush-hog and 72 inch finish mower without any undo strain. The snow blade I have is a Curtiss, it goes in place of the FEL bucket, 4 pins. It's a breeze to mount for two people but doable for one.. For ease of changing implement, both my mowers are rear mounted, takes a little getting used to mowing around trees an tight places but you adjust.

If not already equipt with a mid-PTO, one can be added for under $400 dollars. I've been told
the 790 will handle a 72 in mid-mounted mower deck without FEL removal..

You'll love the direct injection engine, it starts like a gas engine down to near freezing..
Below freezing you'rll need to use the air induction heater, 20 seconds an it's go...

The only draw back is Deere doesn't off the 790 with a HST drive. If you plan on doing a lot of
loader work a HST is desirable. For most other applications the gear drive is fine. With 8 sp.
it's hard not to find one that is suitable...

If you feel you need HST, check out New Holland's TC 30, it's almost a twin to the JD 790.
Just about the same size, weight, power an price but the NH offers HST.

The JD 790/NH TC 30 tractors are possible the best value in that size tractor today, no frills
but everything you need to get the job done..

PROS:

It is marketed as "no-frills" but JD has to contrast it against the latest and greatest. There are a lot of little features that I like in this tractor.

1) The engine is immensly accessable -- I was amazed how easily I was able to change the fan belt for example.

2) Safety features are as good as any make or other compact. For example, it has PTO and transmission operator presence systems.

3) Relative to the Kubota L3010, I think the drivers compartment is very comfortable.

4) It is well made and the bugs seem to be removed.

5) Dual stage clutch. 4WD is shift-on-the-go engagement.

6) Engine starts immediately - direct injection - auto bleed. I've never had a problem even in below zero weather.

7) dual hydraulic pumps (on 4WD) provide constant flow of oil to both power steering and implements.

8) Selectable PTO allows operation of the mid-PTO, rear-PTO, or mid- and rear-PTO together. Don't know about Kubota or NH here.

CONS:

1) 3PH lift capacity a bit weak relative to Kubota and NH. I have never found this to be a problem though -- I tow a rough cut mower, a 715 lb. 54" tiller through clay with blades traveling in reverse, a PHD and a 65" Woods scraper.

2) Lift capacity of FEL a bit weak relative to Kubota and NH. P.S. Lifting a load of wet pond muck is no problem. Maybe a problem if you are in a hurry to remove a stump.

3) The battery terminal connectors are inferior.

Good luck!

Great tractor. I have owned mine for a year, now. I own a land scaping company and use my FEL all the time. It is what you get used to. I can move 16 CU. Yrds. of dirt in about 25 minutes with it. I rotary mow with a JD 513, have a 60" woods box blade, a 72" landscape rake, a 60" tiller and a 72" grader blade. The 790 handles all of these implements with no problem. The back lifting capability was designed that way on purpose, I believe because of the way the tractor is designed. The front end is a little light without a FEL. Go over a bump with your rotary cutter attached with no FEL on and you will know what I am talking about. The tractor is light enough to go in areas of turf without damaging the turf or making ruts in the soil. I can't really thing of any cons, ecept when it is 97 deg. outside and I am rotary mowing a 30 acre field. Then, I want a cab with A/C and a 15' bat wing mower, which we all know, you can't get on a 790, and it doesn't have the HP to move anything more thatn a 5' rotary.

I bought my 790 two years ago with 35 hours. Overall, I have to agree with Gunfighter's assessment of the 790. I use mine for mowing, post-hole digging, and general loader work.... no complaints overall, all though a little stronger loader would be nice. I'm a pretty hefty guy (240) and don't seem to have any trouble getting in and out of the "cockpit".

Good luck with your decision,
Henry

To all:

I'am 290 lbs 6-2 not anymore cramped than the other colors.

This tractor is true VALUE...If you are looking for bells and whistles go for the 4000 series..

Hydraulic specs are a little misleading....This tractor will pick up most any machine you would ever run behind a 30 hp tractor....the lift specs are listed from a point 24 inches behind lift link balls. The other colors are in many cases giving lift spec at lift point or are using shorter lift links. They will offer long reach links as a option. I have seen box scraper teeth hit rear tires on some tractors....No problem with 790...

Buy the 790 and have fun using it.

Nick, did you get out to look at the 790? I'm a bit late to this thread and it appears everyone has covered the 790 pretty well. I've got just over 100 hours on mine and absolutely love it. Brush cutting, grading, FEL work and stump removal have been my main chores to date. The 790 does them all well. Sure, a bigger tractor would do more faster, but then you're paying a lot more money for it. My only complaint is the battery terminals. Other than that it's a great value in a tractor /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
