8' flail mower is a tough find

Are they as rare in your neck of the woods as mine? I can find plenty of smaller ones and a few 90" offset ones, but 8 footers are almost impossible.

Around these parts one will find an occasional 6 foot but usually 16-18 for chopping stalks. Cannot say that I have seen a 8 foot. Good luck in your search

I have an 84" and a 102", but can't say as that I have ever seen a 96" flail. Here is a new one that you can get in 96".

I had an Alamo 88" but it was a finish flail.
I probably should have been a little less specific on the size (anything around 8' within a few inches) would be great.

Everything around here is 5-7 feet or offset quite a bit.

A Vrismo LP2096 8-ft flail sold for $1500 in July 2010.

Everything around here is 5-7 feet or offset quite a bit.

My 102" is offset almost 2 feet, weighs around 3000lbs and will cut up 4" material. The thing is a monster. I have hit dirt ridges before and the thing acts like a rototiller. :shocked::laughing:

Crazy question: can is cut ordinary 3' tall orchard grass reasonably well?

The larger flailmowers will cut down the orchard grass as long as you travel slowly -totally dependent on the thickness of the brush. You may want to raise the mower and mow at a higher position first and then lower the mower gauge to go over it second time.

You will loose a bit of the efficiency of the wind tunnel effect/pressure gradient that creates the excellent suction ability of a flail mowers grass slicers or scoop knives on the first pass but it will knock it all down and be very rough until the second lower pass.

You should have zero issues finding a used 8 foot or wider flail mower in good condition.

Don't know, never done it. About the only thing that I have really used it for is cutting 50-100 year old sage brush. I would think that it would do that just fine, but like I said never done it.

My 88" Alamo would cut grass great, but it was a finish flail and not much good in the thick stuff.
