8' snowblower on 4X4 truck

Hi to all, I am Installing a 8' 2stage snowblower on a chevy 4X4 and want to run a pump by belt on the engine of the truck and then install a hydraulic motor to run the snowblower. the snowblower should turn at 540rpms. what I have read so far it looks like I need to run about 30 - 35 gpm at around 2000 psi. I figured i could run a electric clutch on the pump to turn it off and on. if anyone has info or advice I would really appreciate it. also if someone has a pump or motor they would like to sell i would also be interested. thanks in advance for any help.

thanks again

I think you are going to have areal tough time getting satisfactory results like that.

I think you need an auxiliary engine like this setup.

Look at this video on You Tube. YouTube - Tracker snow blower 2009 Many interseting videos on You Tube, just search on the You Tube site but as with many search engines, try different words or phrases and you may get different results

Perhaps this has been thought of, but what about putting a generator in the bed and an electric motor on the front? Might be easier to get (for example) a 3 phase 15 hp 1700 rpm motor reduced to 540 rpms ($800ish from a quick ebay search) and a 3 phase generator head ($800ish from a similarly quick ebay search) and then just run a circuit breaker or a solenoid controlled circuit breaker into the cab to turn it on and off. The remote hyd circuit could then be used to run the chute direction. Costwise it would probably be about the same, but it might be easier to run wires than to run 1" hyd lines.

This idea is not soley mine. In 2008 I went with my wife on a tour of Mason Dixon Farms (among others). They have on some of their tractors a 480v genset mounted to the crankshaft of the engine and use electric power instead of hydraulics for some things (we didn't get much more info than that, the other dairy producers on the bus were not really interested. I could have spent all day in their shop and looking at their equipment).

just wanted to thank everyone that post coments on my project here, I am now going with a different setup as a result of the post on here. I am going to use a snowmobile engine to power it. wow what a fun project. I am waiting for the rest of the brgs, sprockets etc to show up and am hoping to have something setup this weekend. I will post some photos on here for the ones that were interested in it. thanks again all and will keep you all updated.

I think you made a smart choice. It was unfesable to use hydro power.

Coming into this late Mike but,

Will you have enough power to run the auger and the fan with a sled engine?

the two cylinder four cycle engine that Hanson uses has both power and torque but is limited in speed due to the snow pack as it is really in effect too small an engine

I would have liked to see them offer a 3 or 4 cylinder Duetz air cooled engine as an option in my opinion as they would sell a lot more of there snow blowers if they did that.

The other thing is the belt drive with the sleds centrifugal clutch is a real necessity as you will be dealing with a lot of resistance.

The sled engine will give you speed and but a very narrow power band and the centrifugal clutch will be your safety valve so to speak.

If it works good on ya, as my Australian friends would say but you may want to consider a used and rebuilt 3 or 4 cylinder Duetz air cooled diesel engine as it would fit there with alittle work and a machine shop helping you as well and they are not really heavy to mount and it would give you plenty of power and torque as the diesel engine will maintain an even power band and as it is a four cylinder you will be able to remove snow at a faster pace than the normal crawl at idle with the Hanson blower;
or if you can find a used Duetz farm tractor in a junk yard etc. :)

Thanks Leonz, I will keep your ideas in mind, but at this time and trying to keep the cost down. I will try the snowmobile engine and see what happens. I googled the engine I have and they say it will put out 90 hp :) It will be interesting to see how the clutches react to a snowdrift etc. that is one area that I think I can play with to help me with the power/torque. I will keep you all post on this project. thanks
