8 year old wants a house rabbit

<font color="blue"> I would have eaten her if she hadn't been such a good breeder and mother </font>

Reminds me of a sign in front of a house down the country road when I was a kid; one of those board signs with rings and hooks for changing during different seasons:

FOR SALE
EGGS
RABBITS
LIVE OR

There was another part of the sign laying on the ground that read:

DRESSED

When I was about 8, I adopted a Norweigen (sp?) Dwarf rabbit. It had a tatoo on its ear and the whole deal. I was told it was show quality and all. But, I was 8 and didnt care in the least. We also had all kinds of other pets around. But, this rabbit was about 4lbs. Little bitty thing. Was SUPER friendly. Loved to snuggle up to your neck when you would sit with it. People used to call it the vampire rabbit cause it would run right to your neck and snuggle. Sometimes even lick you. Was just like a dog. Didnt play, but loved to be put, especially between the ears. Oh, and like someone said, never pick them up by the ears. She did get into these fisky moods when she should just tear around the house in circles for like 10 minutes. Then stop and want to come and snuggle. Dog would just look at it like it was nuts or something. As I got older, I started to loose some interest. This is like 15-16, when I started to get into cars and girls. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif But, my sister-in-law loved the thing. She talked me into taking it and she kept it until it died in her arms sleeping. Was the saddest thing. So.. you can tell my answer to the question. But make sure you get a real young one, or one that has been with people since birth. We didnt litter train ours, didnt know about that until after it was gone. But, I know some one who has. Was just like a cat. But, if you dont litter train, the cage does need to be cleaned a lot. And I see nothing wrong with keeping them inside the house. I would only get one. That way it gets attached to you and not the other rabbit.

We have had holland dwarf rabbits for the past dozen years or so. Down to one. Lost previous one to that mosquito born virus that will kill an animal in 12 hrs. Current one is an indoor bun who has an outdoor cage he visits on good days. You just have to remember to change its tray every couple days and make sure it has water. Don't overfeed them or they get obease and die young. Feed at night enough pellets that they have eaten everything you give before dawn. They always act hungry but don't overfead them.

They are nice animals, friendly, inteligent and fun to be around. Just remember. They nibble. We don't have a single intact extension cord, telephone cord or computer cable in the entire house cause of that <bleeping> rabbit.

One book I had on raising rabbits said to not feed more than they would eat in two hours. I don't know how much obesity shortens their lives; stands to reason that it would, but I do know that over feeding them will prevent them from breeding. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
