Okay, so most of you know that I have a 317 thats just about done with, so tonight I asked my grandpa if I could get out the 80 to bring it over to our shop to start the process. He said go for it and left for a meeting in town. So I jacked it up, and started to take the tires off but it was 5:00 so me and dad had to go home. I managed to get 1 tire and ril off, and its in overall good condition. Its an aluminum sticker tag with the number 7846, so next week it will turn 34 years old! Heres a pic of what it looked like when I dragged it across the yard. The pic of my hand is where my father extended the hitch to reach the 2210 my grandpa has now.

Oh yeah, not a rot hole in it! My dad and his siblings/friends would put this behind their 3 wheeler and i guess gave it a hard romp every time. :/ im glad its in decent shape so all i will have to do is bodywork, and fix the latch for the thing to dump. It trips open if you hit a bump with it and bang hits the ground and drags.

Okay, so tonight I got home and decided to wash the cart, and after that, I brought it inside to start where I left off yesterday. I took the wheels off, and started washing all of the parts and rims in the parts washer. I ended up getting the rims to look fantastic, with a little bit of grease left around the hubs. So tomorrow night I will clean the rims up the rest of the way, and start to sand them down and get them taped up for paint. In the meantime I will tear the wagon down and begin cleaning and sanding parts.

Tonight i really made progress, i took all of the running gear bolts off, and removed the running gear. Then i removed the bracket for the dump latch, and put them aside. I then proceeded to remove the tailgate, which was hard to get out. I got that off, and disassembled the latch. After this, i moved on to the dump latch, this was a task because the pins were brittle, and didnt want to come out to boot. So once i got them out, i was able to completely remove the latch assembly. I will need to modify the bracket for the latch that bolts onto the box, because the latch(pin) doe not go far enough back. I need to make a trip to TSC to get some carriage bolts for this and some things for the 317. Overall, I dont believe that there is much that this cart needs, even though i plan on getting new springs for the latches, and 1 or 2 decals.

Beautiful Cart! Nice heavy steel!

For parts, you might be able to look them up online at the JD web site under Agricultural - Parts - Parts Catalog.

The tires would most likely be Carslile Tires.

Yeah I'm lucky with this one. I look my parts up from the online catalog, and the tires are Goodyear Rib II's. not carliles....

So today i spent a long time working on the cart, took the rest of the running gear apart, and started sanding everything down. I still have to finish sanding most of the running gear and the tailgate, then once I'm done i'll mask off the decals before I can find the right ones. My grandpa was painting a trailer today so I gave him some things to put primer on. I have alot more sanding to go on the box, and when i was sanding the bottom, many dents were revealed. Since this cart will most likely be used again when i'm done, I just plan on putting bedliner in it and not worrying about dents.

Okay, heres an update from the last couple days. I started out by getting everything from TSC that i needed. The only carraige bolts they had that were the right size were 2.5 in long. So i had to cut 22 if them down to about an inch. I also picked up some metric bolts for the 317, when I only needed one, they came in a 4 pack, and 4 acorn nuts that also came in 4 when I need 3. Those things were 7.99$!! Now all the bolts threads are screwed up due to the cutting/grinding. I also started in on sanding everything else down to where I needed to. Last night I started putting all of the running gear parts under primer, removed the tailgate decal and finished up this am. I also sanded the tailgate and box up some more last night. And flashback to two days ago, i put some bleche white on the tires, and they turned out great. So, I now have to get some bedliner and coat the inside of the box with it once its painted. After all the sanding ive done to the tailgate rail, its revealed alot of dents. There is also a large group of them above the "80". Enjoy!

Another update, I started painting everything that was in primer black, and it was a task. I might go up today and put another coat on...and i also masked off the tires! I only took pics of the 1 wheel

well i think its been a while since i last posted, but its pretty much done, I got the remaining 3 decals reproduced for it, but they did not come today like they should have. hopefully tomorrow they will come and it will be done! heres the rest of the pics. once i get the decals i will add the last set!

It looks great!! I have 2 of the 80 carts. One given to me from my Dad that he bought new in 1966. It is in about the same shape as yours before the overhaul. The other one I have I bought 2 yrs ago from a neighbor for $20 (serial # 815). The box and tailgate were in terrible shape. I threw those out and salvaged the rest. I am just about complete with rebuilding this cart and will post when it is complete. BTW I found the decal kit for the 80 here
I plan on fixing up the one my Dad gave me next winter.

awesome! that kit is alot different than the original decals, not only is it the older one, the JOHN DEERE is in a different font, just look at the R compared to the set i had made...

Is there any chart [ like the old JD tractor serial number stuff in the back of their historical books ] that lets you know what year these 80's were made.?? I have one that I bought in the later 70's used that is serial number 018089M, bought with a used JD 140. I use it behind a JD 420 each summer/fall.. it still has it's original Goodyear Terra-Tire Ribs on it. Nice job, you do good work... :)

I have one that I bought in the later 70's used that is serial number 018089M, bought with a used JD 140. I use it behind a JD 420 each summer/fall.. it still has it's original Goodyear Terra-Tire Ribs on it. Nice job, you do good work... :)

no, only the early brass tags you can figure out the year, foil tags like this one are easy, since this one is 7846, it was made the 46th week of 1978. that alum. tag i posted is much like the on you are talking about. i would guess the one i posted is a 73, because they used up the patio decals when tge patios were phased out. if the 140 and the cart were bought together new, then maybe it would be the same year as the 140. this one still has the Goodyears on it too!

I bought the 140 with the trailer about 76 or so. Figure it was a couple years old. Trailer has the brass tag, though... Thanks...!!! Jerry..:)

ok, so the 80 must be around 68 or so. who knows..... does it have tires like mine? or are they skinny?

Has big balloon rib'd tires... almost look like airplane tires.. here is a picture of the tag and tires... and an added picture of my modified toungue [ hacked off the 60" deck that I scrapped out off my 420 ]

ahh, i would still guess around 68-70
