80w90 as hydro fluid??

Anyone heard of 80w90 being used for hydraulic fluid? My brothers iseki powered bolens says to use 80w90 gear dope. But because the FEL and 3pt work very slow, he wonders if he can/should change to regular hydo fluid. Any thoughts??

Nope never heard of using it for Hydraulic fluid. I don't think it would work very well and will probably trash pumps, etc. But I do not know the tractor you speak of and could be wrong. I have been before, after all I am married /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the ford N series originaly used that as hydraulic fluid i believe, but nowdays most people use regular 134 hyd fluid

Thanks for the input. An underhood sticker says to use it but I don't buy it. 80w90 is not meant to be pumped and it seems it could damage the pump after time. my brother also says the system cavitates sometimes. My thinking there is the dope is to heavy to pass through the inlet screen fast enough.

I don't see what would hurt to put hydro oil in and test it out. Thanks again

Hmmmm. When the manufacturer says to use something, there is usually a good reason for it. I think that before I went contrary to the sticker, I would pose the question to the Bolens folks--just to be on the safe side.

My 1978 Kubota B6100 calls for 80W gear oil in the transmission (gear tranny) and it uses the transmission to supply the hydraulic fluid for the 3 point hitch. The FEL has a separate hydraulic system and calls for 30W motor oil.
