870 John Deer

Please help me in my purchase of a 870 John Deer and it's worth. I"m not sure of the year but it has 700 hours on it and it come with a 80? loader. It seems to be in good shape however it is used. Can you give me some information about this unit as far as commerical landscaping, moving soil, loading mulch, and so forth. I will be buying a 60 inch tiller and a box grader and maybe a post hole digger for plant those large trees. However i have never own a tractor before and need plenty of advice and help. Thanks

The 870 is a good tractor, I think you would be happier for commercial stuff with a 970 or 1070 or move to a kubota
"L" series

The 870 came with an 80 loader up till about '96 or '97 after that 440 loaders were used.

I it puts out about 26 pto hp which might hinder the operation of a 24" auger, not sure though.

If you get the serial number off the machine you can usually get quite a bit of information on it.

By the serial number today they told me it was 1990 model. This tractor looks good and seem to be in sound condition. The asking price is $10,200 with loader. I'm wondering if this isn't a little high. What do you think,

did a search on machinefinder.com

no 4wd with fels were listed

there was a 98 2wd with a fel for $12700 with 1190 hours on it.

a 93 2wd w/mmm and 1159hrs for $11900

a 96 4wd w/437 hrs for $12000

a 97 4wd w/136 hrs for $13500

a 95 4wd w/435hrs for $9500

there were cheaper ones but were 2wd w/o fel

all machines listed are by dealers and will tend to be higher than private sales

sounds like a good deal, how is the rubber? look for dryrot. look underneath for bent/broken parts, run it and watch the hourmeter to make sure it works.

Thanks for your help. The rubber is worn on the front and good on the back. This show that he used the 4X4 a good bit. I haven't used it yet and really haven't looked it over real well yet. Trying to get a worth price.
