Wow - great stuff. Thanks guys, especially Soundguy for the extraordinary detail on the intricacies of the hydraulic system. A printout of this post will become part of my operating manual! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can second what these guys say about draft position. Do not use it (lever down) on a rotary mower. Make sure that lever is up in position control. The only time draft position should be used is with a plow. Also, if it is not too late, consider a light 5 foot cutter as the 8n is more than 4 ft wide even with the wheels all the way in. It is not smart to get a mower narrower than your tractor. My 8n easily runs a 5 footer in second gear in average conditions and gets through even heavy stuff in first gear. Also, get yourself an overruning coupler (sized to fit the small 8n pto shaft) which makes operating the mower with that tractor a whole lot better. Definitely use the lowest hole which is for heavier equipment and that 5 foot cutter is just about as heavy as you can go with an 8n.

A question was posed to me via PM ( I won't identify the poster )...about the validity of my comments on using the top hole of the 3pt rocker.. at the time, I gave my answer based on experience, but didn't reference a 'book'.. so.. here is the book reference:

8n owners manual, reprint, 1952 edition.. page 115... refers to using bottom hole of 3pt rocker for heavy loads.

1952, reprint, NAA owners manual, section 8, pages 66 and 67, hyd operation. Refers to using draft control with ground engaging implements, and position control for objects operating at a set height ( mowing!!! ), also again reafirms that heavy loads go inthe bottom hole, and light loads go in the top hole.
