Ak,
I had a friend that inherited a tired ole 8N from his in-laws, had a hard time getting to engine run predictably and also had compression issues. What he did was , took the head off, did a valve job, bought new cylinder sleeves/ piston and rings and a gasket kit. Took the oil pan off from the bottom, removed the crank/piston. Had to destroy the old sleeves to take them off. New sleeves was hard to push in... we kind of brain stormed it
. We decided for him to put the new sleeve in a plastic bag after he lubed it a bit, he latter put the sleeves in the freezer for couple of hours, had everything lined up , got the sleeves one by one out of the freezer and pushed them in the hole almost effortlessly. he pushed the pistons in from the top and got the cranks attached and torqued from the bottom. He then put the head back on, put the bottom pan on, oil and water and he was good to go. Did not cost him an arm and a leg to do, parts are readily available and it is relatively a safe project with the tractor standing up while you do all the work. That may be the way to go..Of course if Soundguy blesses it
