i HAVE A 1950 8N THAT I USE REGURLARLY. VERY RARELY IT APPEARS MY CLUCTH WILL NOT DISENGAGE AND I CORRECT THE PROBLEM BY CLIBIMG A HILL OR DEPRESSING THE BRAKE WITH THE CLUTH PEDAL DEPRESSED, THAT USUALLY RELEASES THE CLUTCH AND I GO ABOUT MY BUSINESS. DURING A RECENT WNOSTORM I WAS PLOWING MY ROAD FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS WITH NO SIGN OF A PROBLEM(NEVER CHANGE GEAR) AND WHEN I WENT TO STOP I COULD NOT GET THE TRACTOR TO STOP WITH THE CLUTCH PEDAL DEPRESSED. LUCKILY I PULLED INTO MY BARN AREA AND SHUT THE KEY OFF. WITH THE ENGINE OFF I WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE TRACTOR OUT OF GEAR AND PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL. I HAVE RESTARTED IT SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE CLUTCH WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR. I AM NOT A MECHANIC AND DON'T HAVE A CLUE AS TO THE OPERATION BUT I HAVE A FRIEND THAT SAYS THE CLUTCH PLATE IS NOT DISENGAGING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. DOES THIS SITUATION REQUIRE A TEAR DOWN OR IS THEIR SOME REMEDY LESS EVASIVE. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP-8N NUT

i don't believe there was any more message.. he was just welcoming you.

PS.. those of us with older eyes find it HARD TO READ ALL CAPS.

Try adjusting your clutchfreeplay first. then block your clutch for a bit and come back and check it.

also check the bellhousing drain with the jigly cotterpin under the trans/clutch bellhousing and make sure it is open and draining.

if not, oil from a rear main or input shaft seal leak can build up and coat clutch. with actually CAN make it grabby and sticky.

if blocking it for a while helps, just remember to block it each night when you put it away.

if the block does not help. get it outside, turn gas off. put in 4th or reverse, lock brakes, block clutch, set in seat. use a screwdriver to bump safety starter switch screw terminal to the trans cover, this will bump the starter. just bump it. usually after about 5-10 bumps.. if it's gonna let go.. it does.

if that fails., pull the starter ( be carefull.. don't pull the cover off the armature. ), and if it is oily in there, expend a can of brake cleaner with a lil straw bent around the ring gear/flywheel, adn keep that clutch blocked another day.. try procedure with bumping again.

past that.. 2 options..

1, some people drill a hole inthe bell housing to put a large screwdriver in for prying.. then plug with a cork when not needed. OR you can split it. I'd vote for the latter myself.

Interesting, I am having this very same problem with my '51. The clutch just will not disengage! Adjustment is maxed out. I will try those things you mentions soundguy. Woudl be nice to know if any of that worked for the poster. But I am mentally preparing myself to bite the bullet and split it :(

Thanks

If the clutch is stuck You can also pull the starter or steering box and spray with BP Blaster with the clutch blocked down. Once broke free you can spray with brake cleaner and while driving slip the clutch a couple of times. continue to block the clutch pedel when not in use.

There are about 5 different places where something could go wrong and cause the clutch not to release. More than likely, it's stuck since you were previously having problems with it. One other potential problem could be the pin that locks the bell crank to the clutch shaft. The pin may shear or the radial portion of the bell crank can split and fail to rotate the clutch shaft.

Have finnally got to try all of the possible solutions before splitting the tractor. None worked and I have repeated them all but I did not take the starter out again. Another fried of mine has an 8N and is not having any clutch problems but he noticed he has two holes that were drilled in the housing, approx. 1 3/8". Apparently a previous owner had a similar problem to mine and did the drilling and prying route. Not sure ifI will go that route but am having trouble finding someone who will split the tractor and work on the clutch. I have a couple of tractor shows coming up and will seek out someone who has that expertise since that is beyond my capability. Thanks for your advise it was worth a try. Miss having my 8N at my disposal, seem to use it all the time.

A hole that big it the housing was probably used for a sherman or hupp trans. You only need a quarter inch hole. Enough to get a straw thru.I've done that and sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. If the clutch is stuck good than just split and be done with it. it only takes a few hours.A little longer if it's your first time.
